Crocodiles Trump T. Rex as Heavyweight Bite-Force Champions, new study shows

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? Paul M. Gignac, Ph.D., Instructor of Research, Department of Anatomical Sciences, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and colleagues at Florida State University and in California and Australia, found in a study of all 23 living crocodilian species that crocodiles can kill with the strongest bite force measured for any living animal. The study also revealed that the bite forces of the largest extinct crocodilians exceeded 23,000 pounds, a force two-times greater than the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex.

Their data, reported online in PLoS One, contributes to the understanding of performance in animals from the past and provides unprecedented insight into how evolution has shaped that performance.

In "Insights into the Ecology and Evolutionary Success of Crocodilians Revealed through Bite-Force and Tooth-Pressure Experimentation," the researchers detail their examination of the bite force and tooth pressure of every species of alligator, crocodile, caiman, and gharial. Led by Project Director Gregory Erickson, Ph.D., Professor of Biological Science at Florida State University, the study took more than a decade to complete and required a diverse team of croc handlers and scientists.

"Crocodiles and alligators are the largest, most successful reptile hunters alive today, and our research illustrates one of the key ways they have maintained that crown," says Dr. Gignac.

The team roped 83 adult alligators and crocodiles and placed a force meter between their back teeth and recorded the bite force. They found that gators and crocs have pound-for-pound comparable maximal bite forces, despite different snouts and teeth. Contrary to previous evolutionary thinking, they determined that bite force was correlated with body size but showed surprisingly little correlation with tooth form, diet, jaw shape, or jaw strength.

Dr. Gignac emphasizes that the study results suggest that once crocodilians evolved their remarkable capacity for force-generation, further adaptive modifications involved changes in body size and the dentition to modify forces and pressures for different diets.

The team has been contacted by editors of the "Guinness Book of World Records" inquiring about the data.

Among living crocodilians, the bite-force champion is a 17-foot saltwater croc, with a force measured at 3,700 pounds.

"This kind of bite is like being pinned beneath the entire roster of the New York Knicks," says Dr. Gignac, illustrating the tremendous force displayed by the living creatures. "But with bone-crushing teeth."

The research was funded by the National Geographic Society and the Florida State University College of Arts and Sciences.

Bon Rappetite: Inside joke goes viral, becomes a cookbook | Food ...

Back in late January, rumblings and blog posts began to appear about what appeared to be the most ridiculous ? and most genius ? new restaurant concept Atlanta had ever seen: Bon Rappetite, the world?s first hip-hop restaurant. Opened in East Atlanta, the website included contact information, restaurant hours, a list of upcoming events, and a menu comprised of hip-hop themed puns, like the Wu-Tang Clams or Lil? Kimchi. This looked too good to be true.

And, in fact, it was.

Bon Rappetite is the brain child of social media marketing firm Baby Robot Industries co-founders Everett Steele and wife Bunny Mcintosh. The website began as an inside joke a year earlier, the result of round(s) of beers and a list of rap-themed puns scribbled onto a bar napkin. Steele and Mcintosh emailed the joke site out to a few friends and then forgot about it.

Next thing they know, Scoutmob stumbles onto the site and posts about it, then Creative Loafing picks it up. Within days, CNN and The Huffington Post have run stories on them, their server is crashing from thousands of hits per day, phone ringing off the hook with diners asking if they take reservations, and their inside joke has its own Urbanspoon page.

Well, what was once only a joke-gone-viral has gotten a little more rizzle. Building off of the interest generated by the faux-site, Steele teamed up with co-writer Chris Hassiotis to turn the puns into real recipes and launch Bon Rappetite: The Cookbook. Now, you can whip up dishes like the Too $hort Rib Tacos or Queen LaPizza at home.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? People queuing up for Mega Millions tickets aren't the only ones salivating over the record $540 million jackpot that could be won Friday ? some state governments struggling through lean times know a hometown winner would bring a tax bonanza.

Taxes on a lump-sum payment option to a single winner could mean tens of millions of dollars of badly needed revenue that could go to restore entire social service programs on the chopping block, pay for hundreds of low-income housing units, forestall new taxes or hire more state troopers.

So many tickets have been sold that the jackpot climbed Thursday to the largest in history, according to officials in Rhode Island, one of 42 states where Mega Millions is played. If a lone winner took the lump-sum payout on the jackpot's current amount, it would be an estimated $389.8 million.

"I'd love it if a Rhode Islander wins," said Rep. Helio Melo, the chairman of the House's Finance Committee.

In Rhode Island, when the tax man comes calling for his 5.99 percent, that would mean an estimated $23.3 million, forked over in a single payment.

With it, the state could pay for most of a $25 million bond for affordable housing that voters may be asked to approve this fall. It could also help Rhode Island reach its goal for aid to school districts for the first time. The state, which has a $7.9 billion budget, is $22 million short.

A big lottery windfall wouldn't solve the state's fiscal woes, but it could help chip away at the debt, pay for one-time expenses or delay budget cuts or tax increases ? including on expensive clothing, pet grooming, car washes and taxi fares ? at least for a year, Melo said.

States set their own tax rates on lottery winnings. New York, for instance, charges 8.82 percent, while several, including California, charge none.

Ohio's share of the lump-sum payout would be $23 million, hardly pocket change but still a fraction of the state's $56 billion two-year budget.

"We're not holding our breath waiting for a tax windfall for the state, but we will always root for Ohio and Ohioans and hope lottery luck comes to a Buckeye," said Joe Testa, the state's tax commissioner.

Connecticut would get more than $26 million in state taxes from a winner who takes the lump sum. The money could be used to help fully pay for Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's proposal to channel more money to schools, said state policy Undersecretary Gian-Carl Casa.

It could also help get rid of recently imposed sales taxes on non-prescription drugs, at a cost of $17.2 million, with money left over to hire enough state police troopers to meet the statutory minimum of 1,248, at a cost of $8.9 million.

Rhode Island already has a tax windfall coming its way from two recent Powerball wins. An 81-year-old Newport woman won the Feb. 11 jackpot worth $336.4 million, and the winning ticket for $60 million jackpot on March 7 was sold here.

The Rhode Island Association of School Committees has asked the state to use the $17 million for technology and wireless Internet in schools. That would be in place of a $20 million bond.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Fox News Channel commentator Geraldo Rivera said Tuesday that he's sorry for suggesting that a hoodie worn by unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin was as much responsible for his death as the neighborhood watch captain who shot him.

Rivera said a conversation with his oldest son on Monday convinced him he was wrong. Rivera said it was the first time 32-year-old Gabriel Rivera had said he was ashamed of something his dad had said ? and it caused the dad a sleepless night.

"He had never, ever used language like that," Rivera said. "It was like, 'Whoa, what have I done that would make my son say that?'"

Rivera's comments last week triggered an angry response among people concerned about the case involving the 17-year-old Martin, who was carrying a bag of candy and a can of iced tea while returning to the Sanford, Fla., home of his father's fianc?e when he was shot last month.

Martin, who was black, was shot by George Zimmerman, who has a white father and a Hispanic mother and has said he was acting in self-defense. The lack of legal action taken against Zimmerman has stoked racial tensions and led to protests around the country and debate about self-defense legislation.

Rivera said he was apologizing "for offending anyone."

"I apologize for the language," he said. "I don't apologize at all for the substance of my advice. I was trying to save lives."

Rivera said his oldest son was witness to tension between his father and brother, 24-year-old Cruz Rivera, over the young man's clothing. Rivera said he wanted urban parents to realize that clothing their children wear ? such as hooded T-shirts or low-slung pants ? could appear menacing to people who don't know them and could put them unnecessarily in danger.

People lost sight of the message because of the provocative words blaming the hoodie as much as Zimmerman, Rivera said. The death of an unarmed teenager should be the issue, he said.

"I wanted to provoke a response," he said. "I never expected it to be a viral avalanche."

Readiness program targets pre-K learners | ABC Newspapers

In the past, kindergarten was a time for students to ease into their academic careers; now children are now expected to enter school ready to learn.

One program in the Anoka-Hennepin School District helping young learners and their families is the Kindergarten Readiness Preschool (KRP) program.

Sasha Thornhill enjoys a lesson during the Kindergarten Readiness Preschool at University Avenue Elementary School.

KRP is targeted to students learning to speak English as well as students from English-speaking families who meet income guidelines.

For those students, KRP is available at no cost and transportation is provided.

KRP is currently available at University Avenue and Mississippi elementary schools and Riverview Early Childhood Center.

Because of its success and new literacy aid funding provided by the state, KRP will add five sites in the fall. Those sites are still being determined.

According to Steve Kerr, director of District 11 Community Education whose department oversees KRP, the program has been successful for many reasons.

Kerr cites parents? interest in having their students take part in a program like this, partners, such as the school board and district administration, who work to support the program and KRP teachers who do an outstanding job of providing solid instruction in all areas of development.

?The children make wonderful progress throughout the school year,? he said.

?The gains in skills are evident in their social interactions, vocabulary development, their knowledge of letters, numbers and much more.

?I love how enthusiastic the early childhood teachers are about the progress of children in the kindergarten readiness preschool program.?

Beth Yokom, an early childhood family education (ECFE) and school readiness program (SRP) supervisor, works with the University Avenue site. Joni Warzala is the classroom teacher.

Both women have seen first-hand success with KRP. They say it differs from other preschool programs in many ways.

Yokom likes the ?extras? available in an elementary school.

?The children ride the school bus, there is a gym and students can attend assemblies appropriate for them,? she said.

?For students, we are able to make connections with staff, such as speech therapists; for parents, we are able to build a comfort level with school.?

Warzala likes the four-day week schedule versus the two-day-a-week schedule found in many preschools.

Because of holidays, or health or transportation issues, under the two-day-a-week schedule, many times teachers don?t get to see students two days a week, according to Warzala.

Even when they do, there are three to four days between classes, Warzala said.

?In working with kids it?s important to build trust and make a connection,? she said. ?With a four-day schedule it?s easier to build that trust so you can move onto other things.?

A longtime preschool teacher, Warzala said with the four-day week, students have an easier time getting into a routine and paying attention.

Working with Sue Mueller, an assistant teacher, and Shirley Brede, a special education paraeducator, Warzala is able to do activities with students in November that in years past had to wait until after winter break.

With greater expectations for students, this is very important, she said.

?Between the ages of four and five, there is a huge window for math and literacy potential,? Warzala said.

?For example, I?m always amazed at how students hit a point and then they want to know how to read. If you don?t get them at that time you lose that.?

Warzala said it?s important that families know what is expected of students.

?When I graduated from college, I taught kindergarten and first grade,? she said.

?What I?m teaching now in preschool is what I taught then in kindergarten.

?When students leave KRP, we want them to be able to write their names, name at least 30 upper and lower case letters and be able to count to 20. It?s important to get parents on board with this.?
