Planet's deepest spot may hold clues to life

The deepest place on the planet may also hold the clues to the origin of life on Earth.

The discovery of microbial mats ? bizarre-looking, filamentlike clumps of microorganisms ? living off chemicals from altered rocks 35,803 feet (10,912 meters) beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean comes from samples and video collected by an unmanned lander, part of movie director James Cameron's mission to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Researchers have speculated that a similar setup may have sparked the chemical steps that lead to life on Earth, and possibly elsewhere in the solar system.

"We do think that this chemistry could be the roots for metabolism," said Kevin Hand, an astrobiologist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. "It could be the driving engine that leads to the emergence of life," he said. "Perhaps not just here, but also on worlds like Europa," an icy moon of Jupiter.

Cameron's Deepsea Challenger expedition made dives to the New Britain Trench and the Mariana Trench in the southwestern Pacific Ocean between Jan. 31 and April 3, with one manned dive to Mariana's Challenger Deep, the dark, flat pool that scientists now know houses a surprising array of life. A peek at results from the expedition were presented to a packed audience here Tuesday (Dec. 4) at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

The filmmaker journeyed inside a steel sphere encased in foam ? dubbed the Deepsea Challenger ? built to withstand the crushing pressures below the ocean's surface. The expedition traveled with two unmanned seafloor "landers" ? large contraptions hoisted over the side of a ship and dropped to the seafloor. Once on the bottom, bait attached to the lander lured seafloor creatures to the craft, and a suite of instruments took samples, photographs and data.[ Images: James Cameron's Historic Deep-Sea Dive ]

When he emerged, Cameron told reporters the view was "bleak" and "looked like the moon." But scientists who examined data collected during the deep dives, both manned and unmanned, soon discovered there was life in the coldest, darkest sea.

Bizarre, never-before-seen creatures
Along with the discovery of thriving deep-sea mats, several new species swam by the expedition's high-definition cameras and into its collection tubes. Scientists are now analyzing bacteria and other organisms brought back to the surface.

Giant, 7-inch-long (17 centimeters) amphipods, a shrimplike crustacean that may scavenge fallen logs in the trench, were trapped at nearly 7 miles (11 kilometers) below the surface in Challenger Deep and hauled back to the ship. Tests reveal the creatures contain compounds that help tissues and proteins function better at high pressure, including scyllo-inositol. The compound is identical to a drug used in clinical trials to break down the amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease, said Doug Bartlett, a microbiologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.

Some 20,000 microbes from the trench are being picked over and will undergo genetic analysis, he said. There were also abundant numbers of xenophyophores, a giant amoeba that is among the largest individual cells in existence.

Could you love a worm?
The expedition also spied unusual species during practice runs in the New Britain Trench near Papua New Guinea. The submersible reached 26,900 feet (8,200 m) at its deepest dive in the trench on March 7, Cameron said. [ Infographic: James Cameron's Mariana Trench Dive ]

The biggest species of the deep-sea trench was a type of sea cucumber called a holothurian, Bartlett said. "They have been implicated in the past to exist at these depths, but not filmed and reported. We saw one that we think could represent a new species," he said.

The higher elevation walls of New Britain, which extend to a depth of around 12,467 feet (3.8 km) depth, anchored hundreds of acorn worms, a deep-sea invertebrate that leaves distinctive spiral traces of poo on the seafloor. "If you've never thought of loving worms, if you've seen these videos, you would love worms," Bartlett said.

Clues to early life
The high-definition video provided close-up images of not only the world's deepest sea life, but also the planet's oldest seafloor. At 180 million years old, rocks at the bottom of the Mariana Trench were molten lava when giant dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

Cameron's imagery from the New Britain Trench, shown at the meeting, may be the deepest pictures ever taken of pillow lavas, formed when lava erupts under water, said marine geologist Patty Fryer of the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. And in the Sirena Trench, where an unmanned lander made a descent to 35,761 feet (10,900 m), researchers unexpectedly discovered outcrops of chemically altered rock called aragonite, lizardite and brucite, said JPL's Hand.

Though the lander's rock sampling arm wasn't functioning properly, Hand later deduced the rock's composition by sieving a few grains of sediment from a water sample brought back to the surface. "It was akin to Mars sample return for me," he said. "Though it's not much, it was plenty to do some great analysis. The analysis was very consistent with seeing those alteration products," he said.

Feeding on hydrogen
The altered rock is part of the younger tectonic plate overlying the ancient Pacific seafloor, Fryer said. The Mariana trench is a subduction zone, where two of Earth's tectonic plates meet and one slides beneath the other. Water percolating up through the rocks alters the minerals through a process called serpentinization, releasing sulfur, methane and hydrogen, which can feed bacteria ? the last, in particular, is "like cotton candy" for microbes, she said.

The outcrop was covered in part by a few meters of thick, filamentlike organic mats. "There was an astonishingly bizarre microbial ecosystem populating these talus blocks," Hand said. "To see this kind of structure, this kind of mat in organized form was quite a surprise."

In recent years, researchers have speculated that early life on Earth arose 4 billion years ago at subduction zones similar to the Mariana Trench. Temperatures were cooler in the deep trenches, and serpentine rocks may have provided the necessary chemical jump-start.

"These deep-sea trenches are places were life might have emerged on Earth," Cameron said. "These mysteries need to be unraveled. Hopefully, we will dive again."

There are no plans for another dive as yet, but Cameron said the submersible and landers are operational and sitting in a barn on his Santa Barbara, Calif., property. "The question is where the funding is going to come from," he said. "I'll have to aggregate funding to do it. I've also got this hobby I do occasionally where I make movies about Pandora."

Why School? is a superb summary of why schools need to be different. We now live in a world where the rule is abundance, not scarcity. Where teachers are from all around the world, not just in those buildings down the street. Where students can make and do and share, not just sit passively and regurgitate.

There are lots of insights in this short text. I read the entire book in a sitting of an hour or two. But the ideas within will last much, much longer?

A few quotes to whet your appetite:

1. ?let?s scrap open-book tests, zoom past open-phone tests asking Googleable questions, and advance to open-network tests that measure not just if kids answer a question well, but how literate they are at discerning good information from bad and tapping into the experts and networks that can inform those answers. This is how they?ll take the real-life information and knowledge tests that come their way, and it would tell us much more about our children?s preparedness for a world of abundance.?

2. ?Discovering the curriculum changes the teacher?s role in the classroom. It becomes less about how well the teacher develops the lesson plan and what that teacher knows (though those ingredients are still important). Countless hours spent filling in those worksheet blanks, working those test problems, finishing off those projects, and Tess and Tucker had literally zero investment in any of it after their grades and our signatures were in place. Zero.?

5. ?I?d articulate the shift to teachers like this: Don?t teach my child science; instead, teach my child how to learn science ? or history or math or music. With as many resources as they have available to them today (not to mention what they?ll have tomorrow), kids had better know how.?

Make school different. Start by reading this book. I?ve already ordered multiple copies as gifts for colleagues, friends, and family members, with plans to expand the circle even further. If you like this book ? and you will ? do the same for your own circles. And then start talking with each other about what school could (and should) be.

(AP) ? Johnny Manziel and Manti Te'o are in position to make Heisman Trophy history.

Manziel, the redshirt freshman quarterback from Texas A&M, and Te'o, Notre Dame's star linebacker, along with Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein, were invited Monday to attend the Heisman presentation ceremony.

Manziel is the favorite to win college football's most famous player of the year award on Saturday night in Manhattan. He would be the first freshman to win the Heisman and the first Texas A&M player since halfback John David Crow won the school's only Heisman in 1957.

"I'm overwhelmed by this tremendous honor of representing Texas A&M, the 12th Man and all my teammates in New York," Manziel said in a statement. "This is a dream come true for me, and I know it's a credit to all my coaches and teammates. I definitely wouldn't be a Heisman finalist without my teammates and coaches."

Three sophomores have won the award (Tim Tebow in 2007, Sam Bradford in 2008 and Mark Ingram in 2009), but the best a first-year player has ever done is second.

Adrian Peterson of Oklahoma finished second to Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart in 2004. Peterson was a true freshman. As a redshirt freshman, Manziel attended A&M last year and practiced with the team but did not play.

Michael Vick of Virginia Tech came in third in 1999 as a redshirt freshman and Herschel Walker was a true freshman for Georgia in 1980 when he finished third in the Heisman balloting.

Nicknamed Johnny Football, Manziel quickly became a national sensation this season, putting up huge numbers in first-year Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin's spread offense. He led the 10th-ranked Aggies to a 10-2 record in their first season in the Southeastern Conference.

With a knack for improvisation, Manziel racked up an SEC-record 4,600 yards of total offense, including 1,181 rushing to lead the conference. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Manziel zoomed to the front of the Heisman race on Nov. 10, when he passed for 253 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 92 yards as the Aggies upset then-No. 1 Alabama 29-24 in Tuscaloosa.

Manziel and Texas A&M will play No. 12 Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl.

Te'o is trying to become the first defense-only player to win the Heisman. The Fighting Irish have seven Heisman winners, tied for the most with Ohio State and Southern California, but none since Tim Brown in 1987.

Te'o became the face of the No. 1 team in the country and leader of a defense that has been the toughest to score upon in the nation. The senior intercepted seven passes, second-most in the country and tops for a linebacker. He also led the Fighting Irish with 103 tackles, and earlier Monday won the Butkus Award as country's best linebacker.

Te'o and the Irish face No. 2 Alabama in the BCS championship game on Jan. 7 in Miami.

Klein would be the first player from Kansas State to win the Heisman.

"I'm just honored with this opportunity that the Lord has provided me here at K-State," Klein said in a statement. "I'm so proud to represent K-State in this because I feel like my road is very synonymous and in line with the K-State way. It has been a process, it has been a journey. There have been a lot of ups and downs, as well as a lot of hard times and growing pains through it. I'm just very proud to represent the K-State family and our heart and spirit in this environment."

He seemed to be the front-runner for several weeks until Manziel's late push. When Klein threw three interceptions in the Wildcats' late-season loss to Baylor, Manziel moved to the front of the race.

Klein is a multitalented quarterback like Manziel, but with a different approach. The 6-5, 226-pound senior is a bullish runner who scored 22 touchdowns and threw for 15 more, while leading the seventh-ranked Wildcats (11-1) to the Big 12 title. Earlier in the day, Klein won the Johnny Unitas Award given to the top upperclassman quarterback in the nation.

Klein will finish his Kansas State career against No. 5 Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl.

Happy face tattoo does serious work

ScienceDaily (Dec. 3, 2012) ? A medical sensor that attaches to the skin like a temporary tattoo could make it easier for doctors to detect metabolic problems in patients and for coaches to fine-tune athletes' training routines. And the entire sensor comes in a thin, flexible package shaped like a smiley face.

"We wanted a design that could conceal the electrodes," says Vinci Hung, a PhD candidate in the Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences at UTSC, who helped create the new sensor. "We also wanted to showcase the variety of designs that can be accomplished with this fabrication technique."

The new tattoo-based solid-contact ion-selective electrode (ISE) is made using standard screen printing techniques and commercially available transfer tattoo paper, the same kind of paper that usually carries tattoos of Spiderman or Disney princesses. In the case of the sensor, the "eyes" function as the working and reference electrodes, and the "ears" are contacts for a measurement device to connect to.

Hung contributed to the work while in the lab of Joseph Wang, a distinguished professor at the University of California San Diego. She worked there for six months earlier this year under the Michael Smith Foreign Study supplement from NSERC.

"It was a wonderful opportunity," Hung said. She worked directly with Wang, who is well-known for his innovations in the field of nanoengineering and is a pioneer in biosensor technology.

The sensor she helped make can detect changes in the skin's pH levels in response to metabolic stress from exertion. Similar devices, called ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), are already used by medical researchers and athletic trainers. They can give clues to underlying metabolic diseases such as Addison's disease, or simply signal whether an athlete is fatigued or dehydrated during training. The devices are also useful in the cosmetics industry for monitoring skin secretions.

But existing devices can be bulky, or hard to keep adhered to sweating skin. The new tattoo-based sensor stayed in place during tests, and continued to work even when the people wearing them were exercising and sweating extensively. The tattoos were applied in a similar way to regular transfer tattoos, right down to using a paper towel soaked in warm water to remove the base paper.

To make the sensors, Hung and her colleagues used a standard screen printer to lay down consecutive layers of silver, carbon fiber-modified carbon and insulator inks, followed by electropolymerization of aniline to complete the sensing surface.

By using different sensing materials, the tattoos can also be modified to detect other components of sweat, such as sodium, potassium or magnesium, all of which are of potential interest to researchers in medicine and cosmetology.

Angels, Dodgers, Royals, Braves among those likely to be most active

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are the latest in a long line of teams that won the winter battle but not the regular-season war.

For all of Arte Moreno's money spent on Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson and a couple of relievers, the Angels added only three victories from their 2011 regular-season total, doubled their run differential from +34 to +68, and stayed home in October.

Meanwhile, the world-champion San Francisco Giants proved again that it's often whom you add during the season ? Hunter Pence and Marco Scutaro to offset Melky Cabrera's PED-related suspension ? that translates into post-season success.

The point being, don't get too carried away with what might occur at the winter meetings, which begin Sunday in Nashville. That said, a handful of contenders and wanna-be contenders face an urgent need to better set themselves up for 2013 success:

Los Angeles Angels: Here they are again, and this time, without the starting pitching everybody thought they had entering last season. So GM Jerry Dipoto's focus rightfully will be there.

The good news is they are down below $100 million in 2013 payroll with the departures of Ervin Santana, Torii Hunter, Dan Haren, Maicer Izturis and Bobby Wilson.

But they still may not be in position to retain Zack Greinke, as given the game's latest influx of television revenue, he likely will get the biggest-ever contract for a right-handed pitcher (CC Sabathia's $161 million leads the list).

The Angels letting Greinke get away after trading three of their top 10 prospects for him in July isn't the way to either short-term or long-term success. But it could happen anyway. And if it does, the next rung of targets, in order, should be Anibal Sanchez, Kyle Lohse and Ryan Dempster.

At least one has to be signed if Grienke isn't, because as of now, Mike Scioscia's projected 2013 rotation is Jered Weaver, Wilson, Garrett Richards and Jerome Williams, along with the newly acquired Tommy Hanson.

Signing Ryan Madson for one year and up to $7 million was a low-risk, potentially high-reward move, and he'll join Ernesto Friero, Scott Downs and Kevin Jepsen in a group effort for those last nine outs on a nightly basis. That's depth made Jordan Walden expendable to bring Hanson over from Atlanta.

But in an already-fluid situation ? and under a demanding, win-now-focused owner ? you know there will be more additions coming, with much hinging on Greinke.

Los Angeles Dodgers: The local television rights deal they are currently negotiating will bring them staggering money ? at least $6 billion over 25 years, according to the Los Angeles Times, meaning at least $240 million per year. That doesn't include national TV money, or ticket and concession revenues, so you see where they could take their payroll soon enough.

That means everybody could be in play. The first priority is starting pitching, which means Greinke is their top target to pair with Clayton Kershaw. Even with Chad Billingsley's 2013 in question, there would more than enough depth with Josh Beckett, Chris Capuano, Aaron Harang, Ted Lilly and Hyun-Jin Ryu, assuming they sign the last after winning negotiation rights. But another front-of-the-rotation type is needed if the Dodgers want to win in October.

Carl Crawford also is questionable for the start of 2013, but the longer-term question is do they keep him and Andre Ethier ? both liabilities against left-handed pitching. And don't forget, they gave Cuban defector Yasiel Puig $42 million, so you know his big-league debut isn't far off.

They also gave Brandon League a generous three years and $22.5 million, but there is uncertainty surrounding Kenley Jansen's health, and not enough left-handed options for Don Mattingly. So expect another key bullpen addition.

Kansas City Royals: There were modest expectations for 2012, which were blown up due to substandard pitching and Eric Hosmer's sophomore slide.

Hosmer is a 2013 bounce-back candidate if there ever was one, and many of those other reasons for optimism are one year further along in their development. So this remains a team poised for a jump in the standings ? maybe not enough for a playoff spot, but the A's and Orioles showed us once again that you never know.

The point of all this is that it's time for owner David Glass to step it up, spend some money ? not crazy money, but enough to take a legitimate shot at the playoffs over the next couple of seasons. A bump-up to $75 million-$80 million would shift the burden to GM Drayton Moore.

They're smart enough to know Ervin Santana isn't going to be enough for a rotation in serious need. In fact, there's a chance he's closer to Jonathan Sanchez than Anibal Sanchez. So whether it's by trade or free agency, there will be another rotation addition or two.

Trading Wil Myers or Salvador Perez for a veteran starter makes sense in a general way, but this can be a dangerous trap. For every time this strategy works, there's an Eric Bedard-for-Adam Jones-plus or a Heathcliff Slocumb-for-Jason Varitek-Derek Lowe example out there. (Sorry, Mariners fans).

Instead, the position-player nucleus should remain intact, and the effort should be made to entice a No. 2-3 free-agent starter. If that fails, then try a deal involving lesser prospects than Myers for another middle-of-the-rotation option.

Atlanta Braves: After a 2011 collapse and 2012 wild card game defeat, the tweaking process already has begun. But all they've done so far is replace most of what's been lost: B.J. Upton for Michael Bourn and Gerald Laird for David Ross, with the Chipper Jones void left to be filled.

They've made Upton their highest-paid player, and with Jason Heyward and Martin Prado leading a long list of arbitration-eligibles, another major free-agent signing isn't going to happen. That makes a more-affordable Shane Victorino a possibility in a left field/leadoff role.

Beyond that option, it's Prado hitting first, and perhaps time to put one of the top pitching prospects in a deal for more certainty at either third base or left field. An outfield of Upton, Upton and Heyward certainly is an intriguing possibility, isn't it? Affordability may be another thing, though, as Justin Upton is due $38.5 million in 2013-15.

Atlanta-area native Dexter Fowler is cheaper possibility, especially with the Rockies' need for pitching, and reluctance to deal Troy Tulowitzki or Carlos Gonzalez. Acquiring Fowler would give the Braves arguably the game's best defensive outfield.

Stewart Information double its dividend

HOUSTON (AP) ? Stewart Information Services Corp. announced Monday that it is doubling its dividend payment.

The company declared a cash dividend of 10 cents per share, up from its prior dividend of 5 cents per share. The new dividend is payable Dec. 28 to shareholders of record as of Dec. 14.

The Houston-based title insurance and real-estate services company typically makes its annual dividend payment in December.

However, a number of companies this year have made special dividend payments or moved up their usual dividend payment date because investors could pay higher taxes next year.

Since 2003 investors have paid a maximum 15 percent on dividend income. But that historically low rate will expire in January unless Congress and President Barack Obama reach a compromise on taxes and government spending. As it stands, dividends will be taxed as ordinary income in 2013, the same as wages, so rates will go up depending on which income bracket a taxpayer is in. For the highest earners, the dividend rate would jump to 43.4 percent
