Sleepy After Eating A Big Meal? Here's Why

Calories give us energy, so why do big meals make us sleepy? This counterintuitive experience is a common one, and that goes double on Thanksgiving, where the average American packs up to 3,500 calories in a single meal. And while many people blame the turkey's tryptophan for their soporific state, the truth is that other foods -- like cheese and eggs -- have just as much of the sleep inducing amino acid.

So what gives? It turns out that a few factors conspire to make the Thanksgiving meal the sleepiest yet.

First of all, if you've traveled for the holidays, shifts in your schedule, stress or even slight jet lag can take their toll regardless of what you're eating. But, add to that a few hormonal shifts that happen in the body after a chow down, and you've got a recipe for food coma.

For one, high-carb, high-fat and high-sugar foods (like, say, buttery mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie) trigger a neural response as soon as they hit the small intestine, explains Scientific American. That response, in what's called the parasympathetic nervous system, tells our body to slow down and focus on digesting rather than go out and seek more food.

More specifically, researchers found, a group of brain cells called orexin neurons that are found in the hypothalmus are very sensitive to glucose levels, which spike after a big meal. Those neurons produce a protein, orexin, which moderates wakefulness in the brain.

But orexin isn't the only sleep-related neurohormone affected by food. As the quantity of food increases, so too does the amount of insulin released as a normal part of the body's digestion. The insulin, in turn, increases the amount of seratonin and melatonin that flood the brain, two chemicals associated with drowsiness (and, for that matter, happiness).

While there's no way to avoid a sleep response to a big meal (other than reducing the overall amount you eat and lowering fat, refined carbohydrate and sugar in the first place), it isn't dangerous or a sign of a greater health problem.

It's important to note that having a big meal can affect the important rest you need later in the evening. That's particularly true for those who eat late -- as often happens during a celebratory meal like Thanksgiving.

As Dr. Loren Greene, a clinical associate professor in the Endocrinology Division of the Department of Medicine at NYU previously explained to HuffPost Healthy Living, "If you eat a late dinner, say 10 p.m. with a dessert, some times you start putting out insulin in the middle of the night which can cause your blood sugar to peak and drop," Greene says. That, in turn, can disrupt the sleep cycle, waking you in the middle of the night or preventing one of the deeper sleep cycles we require for true restfulness.

The moral of the story? Eat early, eat smart and try to get yourself back on your normal eating and sleeping schedule as soon as possible.

Here's more on myths about the Thanksgiving meal:

How Do Porcupines Mate? Very Carefully.

Careful porcupines. Porcupines must take care before coitus

These days, it?s difficult to roll out of bed without being hit in the face with a four-headed echidna penis. We are living in the Golden Age of Internet Animalia. Hardly an hour passes without the discovery of some ridiculous-looking new species, bizarre adaptation, or horrendous sex organ. We?re so accustomed to this by now that we just go, ?Nature?s crazy, man!? and get on with our Facebooking?er, jobs.

And that?s great! People are excited about animals and science and bizarre penises?well, penises are an easy sell?but it?s also sort of weird that we may know more about yeti crabs, honey badgers, and blue dragon sea slugs than we do about some of the beasties in our own backyards.

In forests across Canada and the United States, a peculiar mating ritual takes place each fall. If your windows aren?t painted shut, you might open them at night and listen for the tender sounds of porcupine coitus?stark, night-piercing shrieks that could be likened to the noises produced by a banshee banging a Velociraptor.

I know what you?re thinking?quills. It?s true, the North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is equipped with something like 30,000 needle-sharp back daggers, and many of them stand between the female?s hoo-ha and the next generation of prickly progeny. But the screaming actually comes long before the love-making.

You see, the biggest holdup to porcupine reproduction is location. Except for mamas raising babies?which are known adorably as porcupettes?porcupines are mostly solitary creatures. And when the female is ready to mate, she has just an 8- to 12-hour window of fertility to work with.

This means the fellas need to come from distant territories to find, win, woo, and mount her if they are to pass on their genes. Females assist in this process before they come into estrus by lacing the air with a pungent perfume?a come-hither scent created by a combination of vaginal mucous and urine that not even Brad Pitt could make appealing.

Either way, the musk-shake brings all the boys to the yard, and once they are there, it?s a brawl for dominance. Uldis Roze knows these battles by their aftermath: ?a storm of loose quills.? Roze has 35 years of experience working with these creatures and is widely regarded as the Porcupine King. (He also has a delightful new book available?guess what it?s about!) After listening to porcupines battle one fall night, Roze returned the next day and collected 1,474 quills belonging to three separate males. Some of the quills bore signs of bite marks, showing that porcupines are practiced in removing rivals? quills from their own skin after such skirmishes.

Once a male has won access to his ladyfriend, the right to mate is his to lose. At this point, many male animals would simply mount the female whether she was interested or not. In humans, we call this rape. Using the same term with animals is problematic, but walk with me.

If rape is nonconsensual sex, then ducks rape. Seals rape. Male bedbugs stab the females with their penis and then leave it there. Water striders coerce sex by threatening to call in predators if the females don?t submit. Even dolphins, animals of respected intelligence and the default subject of chick tattoos, gang rape.

None of this is to minimize the crime of rape in humans. I bring it up only to note that the animal kingdom can be a dark place. When dominant male elephants are poached or culled out of the social hierarchy, adolescent males develop strange, violent behaviors, like wantonly murdering rhinoceroses. But not without raping them first. And while I don?t claim to know what goes on in a rhinoceros? brain, I think you could probably define sentience as having a major problem with all of that.

But porcupines? My friends, porcupines are rape-proof. And not rape-proof like the magical vaginas of Todd Akin?s fever dreams. I mean rape-proof like the anti-rape condom.

A porcupine?s main defense against predators consists of keeping its backside to a predator. Get too close and you?ll snag 500 quills engineered to embed themselves deeper and deeper into flesh. A mouth full of these painful pins has caused many an animal to starve to death. In fact, the porcupine is so well-respected, it wanders the forest day or night without much hurry or fear. Few animals are clever enough to successfully hunt porcupines, though mountain lions, fishers, and Chevy Impalas have the most success. That mess of quills is equally effective against its own kind.

Thus instead of force, the male porcupine must use persuasion. He first climbs the female?s tree and stands watch from a lower branch until the time is right.

(Yes, porcupines climb mother-cussing trees! Unfortunately, being the second-largest rodent in North America, porcupines also fall out of trees quite a bit. At least their quills are coated with antibacterial fatty acids that seem to protect against infection after self-impalement.)

4 Characteristics of a Strategy that are Conducive to Success ...

Strategy is about winning. Strategy is not a detailed plan or program of instructions; it is a unifying theme that gives coherence and direction to the actions and decisions of an individual or an organization.

Two basic components of strategy analysis:
1) The analysis of the external environment of the firm (mainly industry analysis) and
2) The analysis of the internal environment (primarily analysis of the firm?s resources and capabilities).

Madonna in popular entertainment, General Giap and the North Vietnamese armed forces in warfare, and Lance Armstrong in cycling. Can the success of these diverse individuals and the organizations they led be attributed to any common factors?

For none of these three examples can success be attributed to overwhelmingly superior resources:

  • Madonna possesses vitality, intelligence and magnetism, but lacks outstanding talents as a vocalist, musician or actress.
  • The military, human, and economic resources of the Vietnamese communists were dwarfed by those of the U.S. and South Vietnam. Yet, with the U.S. evacuation from Saigon in 1975, the world?s most powerful nation was humiliated by one of the world?s poorest.
  • Lance Armstrong possessed a powerful combination of physical and psychological attributes. Yet these endowments were not markedly superior to other top-class cyclists?especially after Armstrong?s near-death encounter with cancer.

Nor can their success be attributed either exclusively or primarily to luck. For all three, lucky breaks provided opportunities at critical junctures. None, however, was the beneficiary of a consistent run of good fortune. More important than luck was the ability to recognize opportunities when they appeared and to have the clarity of direction and the flexibility necessary to exploit these chances.

The key common ingredient in all three success stories above was the presence of a soundly formulated and effectively implemented?strategy.?These strategies did not exist as a plan; in most the strategy was not even made explicit. Yet, in all three, we can observe a consistency of direction based on a clear understanding of the ?game? being played and a keen awareness of how to maneuver into a position of advantage.

  • Underpinning Madonna?s many years as a superstar has been a strategy built on dedication, opportunism, reinvention of herself and a well-coordinated multimarket presence.
  • The victory of the Vietnamese communist forces over the French and then the Americans is a classic example of how a sound strategy pursued with total commitment over a long period can succeed against vastly superior resources. The key was Giap?s strategy of a protracted war of limited engagement. With the U.S. constrained by domestic and international opinion from unleashing its full military might, the strategy was unbeatable once it began to sap the willingness of the U.S. government to persevere with a costly, unpopular foreign war.
  • Lance Armstrong?s domination of the Tour de France from 1999 to 2005 was because he and his team did the most effective job of analyzing the requirements for success in the race, developing a strategy around those requirements and executing it almost faultlessly.

What do these examples tell us about the characteristics of a strategy that are conducive to success? In all three stories, four common factors stand out :

1. Goals that are simple, consistent, and long term.?All three individuals displayed a single-minded commitment to a clearly recognized goal that was pursued steadfastly over a substantial part of their lifetime.

  • Madonna?s career featured a relentless drive for stardom in which other dimensions of her life were absorbed within her career.
  • North Vietnamese efforts were unified and focused on the ultimate goal of reuniting Vietnam under communist rule and expelling a foreign army?from Vietnamese soil. By contrast, U.S. efforts in Vietnam were bedeviled by confused objectives.
  • On his return to professional cycling in 1998, Lance Armstrong committed to a single goal: winning the Tour de France.

2. Profound understanding of the competitive environment.?All three individuals designed their strategies around a deep and insightful appreciation of the arena in which they were competing.

  • Fundamental to Madonna?s continuing success has been a shrewd understanding of the ingredients of stardom and the basis of popular appeal. This extends from the basic marketing principle that ?sex sells? to recognition of the need to manage gatekeepers of the critical media distribution channels. Her periodic reincarnations reflect an acute awareness of changing attitudes, styles, and social norms.
  • Giap understood his enemy and the battlefield conditions where he would engage them. Most important was appreciation of the political predicament of U.S. presidents in their need for popular support in waging a foreign war.
  • Lance Armstrong and team director Johan Bruyneel took analysis of the requirements for success in the Tour de France to unprecedented levels of detail and sophistication.

3. Objective appraisal of resources.?All three strategies were effective in exploiting internal strengths, while protecting areas of weakness.

  • By positioning herself as a ?star,? Madonna exploited her abilities to develop and project her image, to self-promote and to exploit emerging trends while avoiding being judged simply as a rock singer or an actress. Her live performances rely heavily on a large team of highly qualified dancers, musicians, vocalists, choreographers and technicians, thus compensating for any weaknesses in her own performing capabilities.
  • Giap?s strategy was carefully designed to protect against his army?s deficiencies in arms and equipment while exploiting the commitment and loyalty of his troops.
  • Armstrong?s campaign to win the Tour de France was based on two key strengths: unmatched determination to win and superior team-building capability.

4. Effective implementation.?Without effective implementation, the best-laid strategies are of little use. Critical to the success of Madonna, Giap, and Armstong was their effectiveness as leaders in terms of their capacity to reach decisions, energy in implementing them, and ability to foster loyalty and commitment among subordinates. All three built organizations that allowed effective marshaling of resources and capabilities and quick responses to changes in the competitive environment.

?

Whether we look at warfare, chess, politics, sport, or business, the success of individuals and organizations is seldom the outcome of a purely random process. Nor is superiority in initial endowments of skills and resources typically the determining factor. Strategies that build on the basic four elements almost always play an influential role.

They are goal focused; their career goals have taken primacy over the multitude of life?s other goals?friendship, love, leisure, knowledge, spiritual fulfillment. They know the environments within which they play and tend to be fast learners in terms of understanding the keys to advancement. They know themselves in terms of both strengths and weaknesses, and they implement their career strategies with commitment, consistency and determination.

Dr. Oz Teams Up With Michelle Obama To Battle Childhood Obesity ...

From The Examiner?..

What do talk show host and famed physician Dr. Mehmet Oz and First Lady Michelle Obama have in common? A determination to battle obesity in children, which has become a national epidemic. From improving school lunches to enhancing her ?Let?s Move? campaign, the First Lady talked with Dr. Oz on his Nov. 22 show about what she wants to do to help overweight and obese children lose weight safely.

Michelle Obama?s ?Let?s Move? campaign is designed to achieve three goals:

- encourage the nation?s children to exercise

- provide healthy food in school cafeterias

- offer parents guidance on how to help their children eat right and get fit

She recommends that kids enjoy a minimum of one hour daily of active playtime, from jumping rope (which she demonstrated with Dr. Oz) to dancing. Offer fruit or vegetables at each meal, and encourage your children to drink water or low-fat milk rather than soda or juice. Make simple changes to meals, such as swapping whole wheat pasta for white flour pasta. In addition, when families eat together, they tend to eat healthier meals, according to researchers at Rutgers University. Consider this as your family motto: ?The family that eats together and plays together stays healthy together!?

Disney Strikes Out in the Online Video Streaming Business ...

Disney-strikes-out-onlineMickey Mouse can?t carry a streaming platform on his own.

Disney (DIS) is shutting down its Disney Movies Online platform. Visitors to the family entertainment giant?s video streaming site are being told that the hub is closing at the end of the year.

?As part of this change, purchases, upgrades, and Magic Code entries can no longer be made on the Disney Movies Online website,? reads the solemn obituary. ?You can continue to stream your existing movies until December 31st.?

Disney is offering refunds on movies purchased or upgraded on Disney Movies Online until the end of February, but folks that bought Disney Combo packs with digital copies for the sake of streaming them through Disney?s platform are out of luck. However, they can still transfer those digital copies to their own drives to watch through iTunes or Windows Media Player.

Goofy in Cyberspace

This isn?t the first time that Disney has closed down an online entertainment destination.

Disney shuttered Virtual Magic Kingdom in 2008 after a three-year run. Virtual Magic Kingdom was a free online game where registered users would play games to win virtual goodies as their avatars explored an online version of the company?s flagship theme park.

There was an outcry when Disney closed the game down, but it was a free game that Disney argued was supposed to be a limited-time promotion all along.

The company can?t make the same case for closing down Disney Movies Online. Folks were making purchases and upgrades under the notion that their investments would continue to be accessible.

Streaming Alone Can Be a Mistake

Disney isn?t necessarily a laggard when it comes to digital video. Disney was the first major studio to provide Apple?s (AAPL) iTunes with content, though it probably helped that Steve Jobs would eventually become Disney?s largest shareholder after the sale of Pixar to the family media darling.

Disney?s ABC.com was also one of the first broadcasters to make its prime time shows available for Internet streams at no charge.

However, even Disney isn?t big enough to support a streaming venture that streams only its videos. Consumers crave one-stop shopping solutions. They would rather have a wider assortment of content from more studios.

Disney never revealed any metrics indicating the success or lack thereof with Disney Movies Online, but no one should be surprised to learn that it didn?t gain enough critical mass to keep the flicks flowing.
