SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It has become a common sight around the country in recent weeks, community members donning hooded sweatshirts to protest violence and racial profiling.

Members of Tucker Missionary Baptist Church are the latest to join in, with many wearing hoodies to Sunday service. The movement is in memory of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed in Florida.

The man who shot Martin says he was acting in self defense, and he has not been arrested or charged.

Church officials said they organized the event to raise awareness in the community.

Leslie Johnson, Tucker Missionary Baptist Church Senior Pastor said, ?We want to make sure that people understand it doesn't matter what you wear on the outside, it's about who you are as an individual and for us not to have to suffer as a people doing those things that we did back in the 60s and early 50s."

Johnson said he believes it's important to take a stand locally because a tragedy like the one in Florida could just have easily happened here.
