Colton Smith, the Army Staff Sergeant, may have had home field advantage at Fort Campbell, Kentucky for UFC Fight for the Troops 3 (UFC Fight Night 31), but he couldn't walk away with the victory. It would be fellow 'The Ultimate Fighter' winner Michael Chiesa who would walk away with victory after a fierce back and forth.
In round one, the two felt each other out until Smith was able to clinch and body lock slam Chiesa to the mat. Chiesa, ever the opportunist, mounted Smith in a quick scramble and tried to lock up a face crank. Smith was able to escape and in another scramble, wound up taking the back of Chiesa, nearly finishing him with a rear naked choke before he slammed his way out of it. After a brief disentangling, Chiesa was able to stand and separate, which is where the round ultimately ended.
In round two, Chiesa was able to reverse his fortunes. As Smith pressed Chiesa into the fence, the bearded lightweight countered with a harai goshi from the whizzer, which sent Smith crashing to the mat face first. Smith tried to get to his base after landing, but Chiesa was able to immediately take the back and secure a rear naked choke.
Smith tapped at the 1:41 mark of round 2.
Chiesa moves to 10-1 in mixed martial arts while Smith drops to 3-3.
