This summer many of you will be out with your children riding bicycles. They are a great way to spend an afternoon and a lot of fun for children. While you are out there please take some time to teach your children proper bicycle safety.
- Check the laws in your state as each one is different. Many require the use of helmets when riding.
- Teach your children the proper hand signals. If you do not know them you can find them online or by visiting your local DMV and picking up a driver?s license study manual (most have them listed in these.)
- Make sure your child (and you) are riding a bicycle that is fit for them. here should be 1 to 2 inches between you and the top bar if using a road bike and 3 to 4 inches if a mountain bicycle.
- Make sure they are wearing clothing that makes them seen by drivers if they are riding on the road. However NEVER allow them to ride on the road without you or another adult present.
- Never ride at night.
- Teach your children that a bicycle is much more than just a toy. They need to understand how it easily they can be injured.
