BlackBerry Z10 spotted at UK retailers prior to BB10 event

Looks like retailers might be jumping the gun a bit on the about-to-be-announced BlackBerry Z10 smartphone ahead of the upcoming event. Twitter user @bandozer spotted one at a UK Phones4U retailer and managed to snap a pic (after the break), saying that "it looks and feels good," while our own tipster forwarded us the above image that came from another store. Looks like the only thing that'll stop the numerous leaks is when RIM finally announces the darned thing -- sometime in the next hour or two.

Understanding The Relation Between Asbestos Exposure And ...

An understanding of asbestos is essential before we attempt to realize mesothelioma lung cancer. Asbestos, a natural fibrous mineral, made use of normally in construction process and manufacturing industries is detrimental to human health. Continuous inhalation of its fibers enhances the susceptibility to respiratory issues and can lead to countless harmful ailments. A top instance of such hazardous illness is Mesothelioma lung cancer. In fact, mesothelioma lung cancer is misnomer as a result of mesothelioma cancers influence the lining of lungs (pleura) and abdomen and not the lungs. Because mesothelioma cancers mainly affect the lining of the lungs, it is commonly referred to as mesothelioma lung cancer. The workers who had worked in industries such as shipbuilding, asbestos mining, and asbestos production are vulnerable to mesothelioma cancers.

Mesothelioma and the Function of Carcinogens:

What is mesothelioma cancer and how does the lining of the lung develop into cancerous? Cancer is a tumor that is malignant in nature. Tumor is formed when there is abnormal cell division and cell multiplication in the cancerous cells. Exposure to carcinogens or cancer-causing material like cigarette smoke, asbestos and silica dust is instrumental in this abnormal cell division and formation of tumor.

Mesothelioma cancer is directly linked to asbestos exposure. Even so, those already exposed to asbestos have a greater opportunity of developing lung cancer if they are exposed to other carcinogens such as cigarette smoke. A study reports that the workers with a history of asbestos exposure and cigarette smoke are significantly more prone to lung cancer than the non-smokers and these with no history of asbestos exposure.

Complications Linked with Mesothelioma Cancer:
asbestos mesothelioma
Commonly, the latency stage for asbestos-connected ailments in common and mesothelioma cancers of the lining of lung in distinct, 20-50 years, which tends to make detection of Mesothelioma a complicated situation. This situation is further aggravated specifically where the worker is also addicted to cigarette smoking. By the time, the disease shows its symptoms, a considerable exposure to additional carcinogens linked to cigarette smoking has already taken place. This makes a worker even more vulnerable to lung cancer apart from the vulnerability to mesothelioma cancers.

Mesothelioma Cancers and Legal Redress:

The Government is conscious of the ill effects of asbestos exposure and the seriousness of mesothelioma cancer. The staff operating in factories with significant risk of asbestos exposure are eligible for Mesothelioma compensation, if the exposure is the lead to of Mesothelioma. There has been a spate of lawsuits for in search of compensation for mesothelioma and lung cancers. In a wide range of instances, the courts have awarded heavy sums as compensation against the asbestos manufacturing organizations.

5.3-inch Spice Stellar Pinnacle Mi-530 hits India with a piquant 5MP front-facing camera

Spice Stellar Pinnacle Mi530 lands in India, brings in flavor with a 5MP front cam

The large phone juggernaut rolls on with word on yet another contender raising its head in India, this time from the Spice stable. While the headline-grabbing 5-megapixel front camera may not be a world first, the Stellar Pinnacle Mi-530 rocks some decent specs for its Rs 13,999 ($260) asking price. The 5.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) IPS display hides a 1.2GHz dual-core chip, 1GB of RAM, 16GB storage, a microSD slot, dual-SIM support and an 8-megapixel rear snapper, all powered by a beefy 2,550mAh battery. We'd have preferred a more recent version of Mountain View's mobile OS instead of the Android 4.0 that the smartphone ships with, but it does attempt to spice up the offering with a bunch of software tricks, including Popup Play and Direct Call. Hardly ground-breaking, but hey, at least self-portrait addicts can indulge themselves without their hands tied.

A driving test can't stop this 105-year-old woman

105-year-old Edythe Kirchmaier recently renewed her California drivers license (Facebook)There apparently isn?t much that can slow down Edythe Kirchmaier. The 105-year-old California resident made headlines on Monday when she passed her driving test ? continuing 86 years without a blemish on her driving record and maintaining her status as the state's oldest living driver.

"I just couldn't imagine myself without a car," Kirchmaier told FoxNews.com. "It just didn't feel very good."

And that?s far from the only bit of notoriety to crop up recently in Kirchmaier?s life. Facebook has declared her its most senior user, she's the University of Chicago's oldest living former student, last week she appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show to celebrate her birthday and she has been a volunteer with the Direct Relief International (DRI) organization for 40 years.

Kirchmaier reportedly drives herself to DRI each week, where she leads a team of volunteers.

"I think I?m a pretty good driver," Kirchmaier told Fox. "I feel safe about getting my driver's license renewed because I?ve never had an accident."

Why Facebook, Apple, and Google Will Fall Like the Roman Empire

John Naughton at the Guardian has a perfect—albeit obvious—observation: Despite their overwhelming dominance, Facebook and Apple will eventually fall. "History should teach us that for today's technology industry titans, the only way is down." That goes for Google, too. And Amazon. It's inevitable. More »

Focus turns to Brazil club safety after fire

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) ? There was no alarm, no extinguishers, no sprinklers and almost no escape from the nightclub that became a death trap for more than 200 Brazilian college students.

As investigators began poking through the rubble and families mourned their dead, questions abounded as the university city in southern Brazil tried to understand how the Sunday morning blaze that killed 231 people could have been sparked in the first place, then rage rapidly out of control.

Why was there only one door available for exit and entry? What was the flammable material in the ceiling that allowed the conflagration to move so quickly? And, more pointedly, why was a band playing at the club allowed to use pyrotechnics inside the building?

Police were leaning toward the band's pyrotechnics as the cause of the blaze during a party at the Kiss nightclub organized by several academic departments at the Federal University of Santa Maria. Inspector Antonio Firmino, who's part of the team investigating the fire, said it appeared the club's ceiling was covered with an insulating foam made from a combustible material that ignited with the pyrotechnics.

Firmino said the number and state of the exits is under investigation but that it appeared that a second door was "inadequate," as it was small and protected by bars that wouldn't open.

The disaster, the worst fire of its kind in more than a decade, also raises questions of whether Brazilian authorities are up to the task of ensuring safety in such venues ahead of it hosting next year's World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

Some critics have said conditions in many Brazilian bars and clubs are ripe for another deadly blaze. They say that in addition to modernizing sometimes outdated safety codes and ensuring sufficient inspectors, people must change their way of thinking and respect safety regulations.

Hundreds of people marched peacefully outside the nightclub Monday night to remember the victims, and demand justice. Some carried signs with slogans such as, "May God's justice be carried out."

"We hope that the justice system, through its competent mechanisms, succeeds in clarifying to the public what happened, and gives the people an explanation," said marcher Eglon Do Canto.

Brazilian police said they detained three people Monday in connection with the blaze, while the newspaper O Globo said on its website that a fourth person had surrendered to police. Police Inspector Ranolfo Vieira Junior said the detentions were part of the ongoing police probe and those detained can be held for up to five days.

Vieira declined to identify those detained, but local media has identified them as two co-owners of the club, and two members of the band that was using a spark machine inside the building when the fire erupted.

According to state safety codes here, clubs should have one fire extinguisher every 1,500 square feet as well as multiple emergency exits. Limits on the number of people admitted are to be strictly respected. None of that appears to have happened at the Santa Maria nightclub.

"A problem in Brazil is that there is no control of how many people are admitted in a building," said Joao Daniel Nunes, a civil engineer in nearby Porto Alegre. "They never are clearly stated, and nobody controls how many people enter these night clubs."

Rodrigo Martins, a guitarist for the group Gurizada Fandangueira, told Globo TV network in an interview Monday that the flames broke out minutes after the employment of a pyrotechnic machine that fans out colored sparks, at around 2:30 a.m. local time.

"I felt that something was falling from the roof and I looked up and I saw the fire was spreading, and I shouted 'Look, it's catching on fire, man, it's catching fire,'" Martins said. "Then the drummer tried to throw water on it, and it looked like the fire spread more then. Then the security guards came with an extinguisher, tried to use it, but it didn't work."

He added that the club was packed and estimated the crowd at about 1,200-1,300 people.

"I thought I was going to die there. There was nothing I could do, with the fire spreading and people screaming in front."

Standing next to the stage when the fire broke out, Rodrigo Rizzi, a first-year nursing student, watched the tragedy unfold.

"I was right there, so even though I was far from the door, at least I realized something was wrong," he said. "Others, who couldn't see the stage, never had a chance. They never saw it coming."

As he headed toward the door, the air turned dense and dark with smoke; there was no light, nothing pointing to the single exit. Rizzi found himself clawing through a panicked crowd that surged blindly toward the door.

"I was halfway across the floor, I could see the door, but the air turned black with this thick smoke," he said. "I couldn't breathe. People started to panic and run toward the door. They were falling, screaming, pulling at each other."

Witnesses said security guards who didn't know about the blaze initially blocked people from leaving without paying their bills. Brazilian bars routinely make patrons pay their entire tab at the end of the night before they're allowed to leave.

Inside the club, metal barriers meant to organize the lines of people entering and leaving became traps, corralling desperate patrons within yards of the exit. Bodies piled up against the grates, smothered and broken by the crushing mob.

About 50 of the victims were found in the club's two bathrooms, where the blinding smoke caused them to believe the doors were exits.

Martins confirmed that the group's accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other band members made it out safely. Martins said he thought Jacques made it out of the building and later returned to save his accordion.

The first funeral services were held Monday for the victims, including brothers Pedro and Mercello Salle. Most of the dead were college students 18 to 21 years old, but they also included some minors. Almost all died from smoke inhalation rather than burns.

National Health Minister Alexandre Padilha cautioned that the death toll could worsen dramatically, telling news media in Santa Maria on Monday that 75 of those injured were in critical condition and could die.

Santa Maria Mayor Cezar Schirmer declared a 30-day mourning period, and Tarso Genro, the governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, said officials were investigating the cause of the disaster.

The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday's fire also appeared to be the worst at a nightclub anywhere in the world since December 2000, when a welding accident reportedly set off a fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309 people.

?

So what?s in a name anyway? Well there can be a lot of history to the origins of our lexicon?for example ?cuisine? comes from the Latin word ?coquna? and is now a French term meaning the manner or practice of food preparation.? The word restaurant originally meant ?food that restores? and pertained more directly to a particular soup that was believed to have restorative capabilities. Now hang on as we pick up the pace a bit.

One foggy morning you awaken to a Tequila (town in Jalisco, Mexico where this strong liquor is made from fermented and distilled Agave sap.) Sunrise (cocktail made with orange juice, tequila and a shot of grenadine) and head down to the local caf? (French noun for coffee pertaining to a coffee house.). For breakfast you order Huevos Ranchero (Spanish for ?Country Eggs? or ?Rancher?s Eggs? served with salsa and fresh tortillas.) with a side of Chorizo (spicy Mexican sausage). You drink a couple of cups of caf? con leche (Spanish for coffee and milk also known as caf? au lait.) to wash down breakfast.

As the day goes on you find yourself in need of a nosh (Yiddish for snack or light meal.) You decide to lunch al fresco (Spanish for fresh and cool outdoor dining) at a bistro (French for small restaurant that serves simple food and drink). Your waitron (American circa 1980?s unisex term for waiter/waitress.) comes to the table and presents you with a Tapas (Spanish verb to cap or to cover, its original purpose was to cover your drink and keep the flies out of it. Mmm. Now it is used to describe small appetizer-size portions of food.) .You order a Roasted Portabello (Spanish word referring to an over grown Crimino mushroom. The word was invented, as a marketing ploy in the early 80?s to sell the oversized mushrooms that other wise would end up as pig fodder. Marketing psychobabble) Mushroom with basil aioli (French Provence style garlic mayonnaise.) and marinated Aubergine (eggplant) served on a Ciabatta bun (Italian for slipper, a long, slender sweet bun.). When your lunch arrives, you notice that it has a Mesclun (mixture of shoots and leaves from a variety of plants including dandelion, spinach, and tat soi.) salad with it. You drizzle your salad with a Balsamic (Italian vinegar made from Trebbiano grapes.) vinaigrette (French for oil and vinegar that has been emulsified into a salad dressing.). While enjoying your Po? Boy (American for a sandwich served on a elongated bun stuffed with what ever is on hand) you quietly sip away at a Cuba Libre (cocktail made from dark rhum, lime juice and cola). You decide on having Cr?me Brulee (French for Burnt cream. A stirred custard that is baked and dusted with sugar that has been caramelized under extreme heat.) for dessert.

After lunch you decide that you will skip High Tea (British tradition of an early supper), but decide to call for dinner reservations (this is a concept represented by proper etiquette to call well in advance to notify an establishment that you are coming. This allows the people who will be servicing your needs to be better prepared to do so.).

You punctually arrive for your reservation (see above aforementioned). The Sommelier (French for Wine Steward.) presents you with the wine list and recommends a Pinot Noir (French for a red grape used to produce French red burgundies as well as Pinot Noir itself. A wine made very popular this year by movie marketing psychobabble.) With notes (tasting notes, or flavors) of Cassis (French European currant.) and tobacco.

The Maitre d?h?tel (French for headwaiter or house steward), approaches your table with the evening?s table d?h?te menu (French for table of the host, in restaurants it?s a multi-course menu at a fixed price.). The maitre d? (shortened version of Maitre d?h?tel) then begins to describe how the New Zealand Orange Roughy (white flesh fish from New Zealand whose original name was Slimehead? more marketing psychobabble.) is prepared. The description of the Baked Slimehead with a dollop (small glob of food) of this and a tuile (French for tile, a crisp thin cookie) of that is too much to resist. You close your menu in surrender and order the Slimeheaded Roughy. As you begin your appetizer (small course of food prior to the entr?e [American for the main course of meal, French for the course served between the fish and meat courses or Australian for appetizer] Whew!) of Escargot (French for snail), the maitre d? returns looking quite flustered. Apparently the chef (French for chief) 86?d(kitchen patois for being out of something) the Orange Headed Slimy thing you ordered. As the trumpet horns of death (strong flavored, black mushroom) sound in you ears with disappointment you throw down your napkin in disgust and begin to walk out of the restaurant. You are stopped at the door by the restaurateur (the owner of the restaurant. Note that there is no ?N? in restaurateur) who apologizes for the situation, but it?s too late, you had your heart set on the Roughy, you leave vowing never to come back.

Out on the street you find that you?re still hungry and you head towards a neon sign. Alas a sushi (Japanese culinary preparation of rice sweetened with rice vinegar also known as sushi meshi.) house. You order nigiri sushi (thin layers of raw fish formed over rice.), hosomaki (sushi wrapped and rolled in seaweed with fish and/or vegetables) and sashimi (thin slices of raw fish served with daikon [Japanese radish], pickled ginger and wasabi {green Japanese horseradish.}). For wine you order Sake (Japanese wine made from rice, served cold with hot foods and hot with cold foods) and finish the evening with a steaming pot of Gunpowder (the highest quality of Japanese green tea).

Six world powers hope to meet Iran for atom talks in February

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - World powers have asked Iran to hold a new round of talks over Tehran's nuclear work in February, a spokesman for the EU's foreign policy representative said on Monday.

The EU's Catherine Ashton, who oversees diplomatic contacts with Iran on its nuclear program on behalf of the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany, said last week the Iranian authorities were stalling on efforts to resume diplomacy over the program.

Her attempts to schedule new talks have failed since December, and a new date has been proposed.

"We have offered a date in February," spokesman Michael Mann told a regular news briefing in Brussels.

The six powers are concerned Iran is seeking to reach the capability to build nuclear weapons, but Tehran denies that.

Nightclub fire kills 233 in Brazil

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (Reuters) - A nightclub fire killed at least 233 people in southern Brazil on Sunday when a band's pyrotechnics show set the building ablaze and fleeing partygoers stampeded toward blocked exits in the ensuing panic.

Most of those who died were suffocated by toxic fumes that rapidly filled the crowded club after sparks from pyrotechnics used by the band for visual effects set fire to soundproofing on the ceiling, local fire officials said.

"Smoke filled the place instantly, the heat became unbearable," survivor Murilo Tiescher, a medical student, told GloboNews TV. "People could not find the only exit. They went to the toilet thinking it was the exit and many died there."

Firemen said one exit was locked and that club bouncers, who at first thought those fleeing were trying to skip out on bar tabs, initially blocked patrons from leaving. The security staff relented only when they saw flames engulfing the ceiling.

The tragedy in the university town of Santa Maria in one of Brazil's most prosperous states comes as the country scrambles to improve safety, security and logistical shortfalls before the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Olympics, both intended to showcase the economic advances and first-world ambitions of Latin America's largest nation.

In Santa Maria, a city of more than 275,000 people, rescue workers and weary officials wept alongside family and friends of the victims at a gymnasium being used as a makeshift morgue.

"It's the saddest, saddest day of my life," said Neusa Soares, the mother of one of those killed, 22-year-old Viviane Tolio Soares. "I never thought I would have to live to see my girl go away."

President Dilma Rousseff cut short an official visit to Chile and flew to Santa Maria, where she wept as she spoke to relatives of the victims, most of whom were university students.

"All I can say at the moment is that my feelings are of deep sorrow," said Rousseff, who began her political career in Rio Grande do Sul, the state where the fire occurred.

It was the deadliest nightclub fire since 309 people died in a discotheque blaze in China in 2000 and Brazil's worst fire at an entertainment venue since a disgruntled employee set fire to a circus in 1961, killing well over 300 people.

'BARRIER OF THE DEAD'

Local authorities said 120 men and 113 women died in the fire, and 92 people are still being treated in hospitals.

News of the fire broke on Sunday morning, when local news broadcast images of shocked people outside the nightclub called Boate Kiss. Gradually, grisly details emerged.

"We ran into a barrier of the dead at the exit," Colonel Guido Pedroso de Melo, commander of the fire brigade in Rio Grande do Sul, said of the scene that firefighters found on arrival. "We had to clear a path to get to the rest of those that were inside."

Pedroso de Melo said the popular nightclub was overcrowded with 1,500 people packed inside and they could not exit fast.

"Security guards blocked their exit and did not allow them to leave quickly. That caused panic," he said.

The fire chief said the club was authorized to be open, though its permit was in the process of being renewed. But he pointed to several egregious safety violations - from the flare that went off during the show to the locked door that kept people from getting out.

"The problem was the use of pyrotechnics, which is not permitted," Pedroso de Melo said.

The club's management said in a statement that its staff was trained and prepared to deal with any emergency. It said it would help authorities with their investigation.

One of the club's owners has surrendered to police for questioning, GloboNews TV reported.

When the fire began at about 2:30 a.m., many revelers were unable to find their way out in the chaos.

"It all happened so fast," survivor Taynne Vendrusculo told GloboNews TV. "Both the panic and the fire spread rapidly, in seconds."

Once security guards realized the building was on fire, they tried in vain to control the blaze with a fire extinguisher, according to a televised interview with one of the guards, Rodrigo Moura. He said patrons were trampled as they rushed for the doors, describing it as "a horror film."

Band member Rodrigo Martins said the fire started after the fourth or fifth song and the extinguisher did not work.

"It could have been a short circuit, there were many cables there," Martins told Porto Alegre's Radio Gaucha station. He said there was only one door and it was locked. A band member died in the fire.

CELL PHONES STILL RINGING

TV footage showed people sobbing outside the club before dawn, while shirtless firefighters used sledge hammers and axes to knock down an exterior wall to open up an exit.

Rescue officials moved the bodies to the local gym and separated them by gender. Male victims were easier to identify because most had identification on them, unlike the women, whose purses were left scattered in the devastated nightclub.

Piles of shoes remained in the burnt-out club, along with tufts of hair pulled out by people fleeing desperately. Firemen who removed bodies said victims' cell phones were still ringing.

The disaster recalls other incidents including a 2003 fire at a nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, that killed 100 people, and a Buenos Aires nightclub blaze in 2004 that killed nearly 200. In both incidents, a band or members of the audience ignited fires that set the establishment ablaze.

The Rhode Island fire shocked local and federal officials because of the rarity of such incidents in the United States, where enforcement of safety codes is considered relatively strict. After the Buenos Aires blaze, Argentine officials closed many nightclubs and other venues and ultimately forced the city's mayor from office because of poor oversight of municipal codes.

The fire early on Sunday occurred in one of the wealthiest, most industrious and culturally distinct regions of Brazil. Santa Maria is about 186 miles west of Porto Alegre, the capital of a state settled by Germans and other immigrants from northern Europe.

Local clich?s paint the region as stricter and more organized than the rest of Brazil, where most residents are a mix descended from native tribes, Portuguese colonists, African slaves, and later influxes of immigrants from southern Europe.

Rio Grande do Sul state's health secretary, Ciro Simoni, said emergency medical supplies from all over the state were being sent to the scene. States from all over Brazil offered support, and messages of sympathy poured in from foreign leaders.

Half of Greek Homeowners Can't Pay Tax - Greece - Greek Reporter

HouseJust over half of Greek homeowners say they will not be able to pay all their property taxes this year, according to a new poll. The Kapa Research survey for the Hellenic Property Federation (POMIDA) found that of 1,414 people questioned, 54 percent said they would not have enough money to cover the cost of a range of property taxes that have to be paid in 2013.

Just under 50 percent said they doubted whether they would be able to meet their mortgage repayments this year, while about 25 percent are already falling behind in their monthly payments.

Regarding landlords who rent out their properties, 82.7 percent said that they are losing money from their real estate assets rather than making a profit. Property taxes were doubled by former finance minister Evangelos Venizelos, now head of the PASOK Socialist party that is a partner in Prime Minister Antonis Samaras? coalition government.

The tax is put into electric bills under the threat of power being turned off for non-payment. Venizelos also doubled income taxes and assessed taxes on poor Greeks for the first time, but despite the tax hikes revenues are falling short of expectations because people can?t afford them as many have also had their pay slashed and pensions cut.

Creative Entrepreneurialism, Artist Self-Empowerment and Other ...

Interestingly, Ben Walmsley of Leeds University posted a link to an article from the American Theatre Communications Group, an organisation I hadn?t come across before ? the article reports a discussion between a group of academics from different US universities, all discussing how they provide entrepreneurial training for their student artists ? ?I had a distinct sense of deja vu about the ensuing conversation: ?it seemed to mirror the discussions we were having at the end of the ?90s, which in the end resulted in the setting up of CidaCo ? I was naturally, and, I?m afraid, irresistibly, tempted to respond! ? Here is that reply: ?I hope it?doesn?t?sound arrogant ? it was reassuring to hear from?the?American Theatre group discussion that the issues facing American artists, even in their hyper-entrepreneurial cultural context, are just the same as those assailing artists in the rest of the world!

Having been a creative entrepreneur for over 20 years, I set up my company CidaCo (www.cida.org) over thirteen years ago (in 2000) specifically to help artists become more entrepreneurial, to earn more from their creativity, and to exploit the opportunities arising from the global move into a knowledge economy.. the company is run by creative entrepreneurs for creative entrepreneurs ? since we have to run our own company, we ?walk the talk? ? e.g when we talk of the demands of cash-flow we know whereof we speak! But our courses, which have grown and adapted over the years, have two unchanging elements: firstly, we focus first on behaviours ? anyone can learn cash-flow and marketing plans: what makes the difference are the attributes an individual brings ? how do we nurture those to strengthen the potential for success? Secondly, we support the training with 1-2-1 mentoring by established practitioners. Theoretical underpinning is enriched by practical know how and networks. As the sector grows in confidence and sees entrepreneurialism not just as ?business skills? (as important as those are) but as ways of making things happen, the demand for knowledge and skills grows. Exacerbated by a challenging financial climate, our clients? need these days is for culture change and transformation of practice and business. With our Silicon Valley partners, we have designed a mix of the best of UK creativity with the best of US innovation to help clients change from traditional thinking and ways of doing things to looking outwards more, with more confidence, to see new opportunities, find new audiences and achieve greater impact, both intrinsic and instrumental! We have taken this work to over 34 countries, sometimes working in partnership with universities (e.g. we designed and co-delivered the first Professional Diploma in Creative Entrepreneurship with the National University of Singapore and are exploring a similar venture in Lagos with the Pan African University) and sometimes with other local organisations eg Fundacion Corona in Bogota or Culture Fund in Zimbabwe. The most important thing that we aim to give all our clients is the sense that they are in the driving seat ? no more artist as victim or ?airhead? ? the future is theirs and they can seize it!

A postscript to that response is that we will shortly be announcing that CidaCo has just been informed that we have been successful in our ACE G4A application: ?we will be offering a 12 month programme of support for 20 arts organisations across Yorkshire, to help them deal with the changing financial environment, seeking new opportunities to exploit their assets, both tangible and intangible, ?and to effect the necessary culture change where everybody in the?organisation, from the Board to the stage doorkeeper,?takes individual responsibility for the company?s success.

Cluny Macpherson, Regional Director of Arts Council England, is quoted in our press release: ?We are really pleased to be supporting CidaCo?s Creative Capital programme with this lottery award. The UK?s arts and culture sector is the largest cultural economy in the world as a share of GDP and a thriving arts sector will make a positive contribution to the country?s economic recovery. Creative Capital will help the sector access new sources of revenue and become even more entrepreneurial. This will result in a more resilient arts sector with a bigger capacity to create fantastic arts experiences for audiences across Yorkshire.?

In the next week or so, we?ll be inviting organisations across Yorkshire to take part in this programme but those of you who read these blogs are getting the heads up! ?(I should say that, if you would like more information, contact the ineffable Dawn Rogers at CidaCo on 0113 373 1754)

Crystal Cruises entices bookings through brand ... - Luxury Daily

Crystal Symphony

Crystal Cruises is eyeing affluent travelers by offering exclusive Mediterranean excursions on its spring itineraries that cannot be accessed through other travel brands.

The cruise line?s new collection of experiences called ?Boutique Adventures? will be available this spring for groups ranging from one to 15 travelers on Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity ships sailing to the Mediterranean. Guests will have exclusive access to estates, art studios, museums, castles and businesses.

?Our guests are looking for different ways to experience destinations and they relish insider access,? said Mimi Weisband, vice president of public relations at?Crystal Cruises, Los Angeles. ?We are continually challenging our tour operators to seek out the unusual, experiential, intimate, cultural adventures.

?Our guests do not want a mass-market excursion ? they will pay more for something if it is unique and authentic,? she said.

Cruising the Mediterranean
There are seven Boutique Adventures that guests can choose. The cost ranges from $223 to more than $1,000 per guest.

Travelers can book the excursions online up to six months before their cruise.

The Florence excursion comprises a viewing of the Uffizi Gallery?s private Contini Bonacossi Collection, which is not accessible to the public.

In Funchal, Portugal, guests will have lunch with a local celebrity at Reid?s Palace or visit a family-run Madeiran winery where they will dine with the owners.

During the Rome experience, guests will make their own jewelry with instruction from a former Valentino model who now designs jewelry.

The Corfu, Greece, excursion consists of a painting lesson from the president of the Corfu Painters Society.

In Italy?s Vetriano, guests will attend the opera at Teatro Concordia, the?smallest public theater in the world.

Teatro Concordia

Excursions in Sorrento and Taormina, Italy, comprise?cooking lessons and meals with local, Michelin-star chefs.

In Taormina in Italy?s Sicily region, travelers will be served a meal while watching a classical concert at a Sicilian castle.

Crystal Cruises will promote the Boutique Adventures via its Web site, quarterly magazine and the on-board Shore Excursion team, per Ms. Weisband.

In addition, travel agents will also inform their clients about the experiences.

?The cruise industry has been becoming more aware of the large portion of the affluent travelers who shy away from cruises due to many misconceptions and overall lack of desire to be on-board the mega-ships,? said D.M. Banks, director at?DMB Public Relations, New York.

?Crystal Cruises is always looking at ways to provide the luxuries of cruises, while providing a boutique experience for their guests,? he said. ?This is another example of them thinking outside of the box to truly connect with their guests.

?Affluent travelers are more than happy to pay a premium for superior services and, more importantly, unique and personalized experiences. These intimate and semi-private excursions are great ways for guest to feel more immersed into the culture and destinations while at port.?

Story time
The new Boutique Adventures are meant to align with Crystal Cruises? ?Begin a New Story? ad campaign that launched last year, per Ms. Weisband.

The cruise line rebranded itself during the second quarter of 2012 through an all-encompassing campaign that centers on the notion of the travel journal and encourages consumers to share memories from past cruises.

The marketing efforts focus on cruise destinations and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, rather than the amenities of the ship.

Begin a New Story uses multiple channels including print ads with digital watermark technology, brochures, online banner ads, email, video and a smartphone app.

For instance, print ads appear in Cond? Nast Traveler, National Geographic Traveler, Town & Country, Travel & Leisure, Coastal Living, Elle D?cor, Food & Wine and Forbes Life.

Consumers can scan the ads with their smartphones to reveal a 60-second video that shows three travelers? experiences in select Crystal Cruises? destinations through watercolor animation.

The brand asked eight watercolor artists to create images that are used in all aspects of the campaign (see story).

?The trend for affluent consumers is more intimate and incredibly special ? both of which are key to these excursions,? Ms. Weisband said.

?Entering someone?s home, sharing a meal with them and just a few other guests, and being able to hear in-depth stories of living and working in that area from your host ? these are experiences that can be deeply personal, bonding and memorable, really expanding one?s understanding of a culture far beyond any info gleaned from merely sight-seeing,? she said.

?Affluent consumers crave such experiences that go beyond the norm, as so many of them travel at a level well above the basics.?

5 Social Media Tools to Help Manage Your Online Reputation 30 ...

Social media has become an integral part of a business? marketing strategy. Reaching out to hundreds and thousands of your audience in a matter of seconds has been made possible by the power of a tweet or wall post.

The idea of managing social media profiles of your business is to maximize interaction with potential clients and increase sales.

However, there comes a time when your social media activity can get overwhelming. Aside from keeping up with the different social media channels you have registered for, you need to deal with posting timely messages on your feed and replying to disgruntled customers to control your online brand reputation. Thus, managing all your online accounts on a regular basis takes up hours of your time at work, leaving you with little for your other tasks.

Ideally, there?s no reason you should spend more than 30 minutes replying and posting on your online profiles. To do this, you will need the help of free social media tools and services to organize your workflow. Below are five highly recommended social media services to make your online work much more efficient.

One of the problems why people take so long in messaging on social media is because they have to sift through different windows and interfaces just so they can send out messages to their audience.

With Hootsuite?arguably one of the most useful social media tools out there?you can register up to five of your social media profiles so you can interact with your Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and LinkedIn followers with ease.

Interface on all accounts is streamlined, so you won?t get confused with the different designs of each site. If you need to dispatch the same message on all your profiles, Hootsuite lets you do that in just one click after selecting the profiles where you intend for the message to appear.

Another advantage of using this tool is the ability to schedule your posts to appear at specific dates and times in the future. This proves very useful especially if you won?t be able to tend to your online profiles due to other commitments. Once you?ve set up the message, they will be posted on the social media sites even if you don?t log in.

InboxQ

There are Twitter users who are simply waiting to become your followers, if not clients or brand advocates. The problem is just they don?t know it yet. These people ask questions about products and services that your business offers such as ?What?s the best X?? or ?What Y should I buy?? InboxQ, arguably the most helpful when it comes to generating leads for your business, lets you find them.

The app can be installed on your Internet browser or Hootsuite dashboard. Once installed, enter the keywords relevant to your business and InboxQ will search for questions on Twitter. You can input as many keywords as possible, as long as they help return more questions. From there, you can answer questions relevant to your business.

Commun.it

This social media service lets you build more Twitter leads to increase your sales by focusing on your list of high-value members. Users who mention your name will appear on the list, making it easier for you to engage with them and strengthen your relationships. The tool will also automatically populate your different followers into groups for segmentation purposes. Similar to InboxQ, you can list down keywords that will be used to discover new leads for your business.

A free account allows you 30 times to engage with a single user, so be judicious with the posts you will make using this service.

Social media is breeding grounds for customer feedback. This will prove valuable to possible clients of your business since they research on the Internet before they do any purchases. Positive reviews draw them in to your business, while negative repels them. What you want is to augment positive feedback, which is why searching for posts on Topsy and Social Mention and retweet, like, and comments on said posts.

For negative comments, make sure to provide answers to the issues they raised on their posts. If possible, find a way to correct your mistakes. This way, even if you received negative feedback on social media, the manner in which you addressed their concerns speaks volume of your customer support.

Are there other social media tools that you use when managing your online brand? Let us know by commenting below!

HIV-like viruses in non-human primates have existed much longer than previously thought

HIV-like viruses in non-human primates have existed much longer than previously thought

Friday, January 25, 2013

Viruses similar to those that cause AIDS in humans were present in non-human primates in Africa at least 5 million years ago and perhaps up to 12 million years ago, according to study published January 24 in the Open Access journal PLOS Pathogens by scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Until now, researchers have hypothesized that such viruses originated much more recently.

HIV-1, the virus responsible for AIDS, infiltrated the human population in the early 20th century following multiple transmissions of a similar chimpanzee virus known as SIVcpz. Previous work to determine the age of HIV-like viruses, called lentiviruses, by comparing their genetic blueprints has calculated their origin to be tens of thousands of years ago.

However, other researchers have suspected this time frame to be much too recent. Michael Emerman, Ph.D., a virologist and member of the Human Biology Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Alex Compton, a graduate student in the Emerman Lab, describe the use of a technique to estimate the extent to which primates and lentiviruses have coexisted by tracking the changes in a host immunity gene called APOBEC3G that were induced by ancient viral challenges.

They report that this host immunity factor is evolving in tandem with a viral gene that defends the virus against APOBEC3G, which allowed them to determine the minimum age for the association between primates and lentiviruses to be around 5 or 6 million years ago, and possibly up to 12 million years ago.

These findings suggest that HIV-like infections in primates are much older than previously thought, and they have driven selective changes in antiviral genes that have incited an evolutionary arms race that continues to this day. The study also confirms that viruses similar to HIV that are present in various monkey species today are the descendants of ancient pathogens in primates that have shaped how the immune system fights infections.

"More than 40 non-human primate species in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with strains of HIV-related viruses," Emerman said. "Since some of these viruses may have the potential to infect humans as well, it is important to know their origins."

Cuba confirms undersea cable carrying data traffic

HAVANA (AP) ? Cuban government telecom ETECSA is confirming that the island's first hard-wired Internet connection to the outside world has been activated.

ETECSA says the ALBA-1 fiber-optic cable has been operational since last August and initially carried international voice calls.

A company statement published Thursday in state-run media says it has been used for tests of Internet traffic since Jan. 10.

ETECSA says more investment must be made in infrastructure to increase Internet access.

The ALBA-1 arrived on the island from Venezuela in February 2011. But officials soon fell silent about the cable amid rumors about mismanagement and corruption involving the project.

Its status was unknown until this week, when U.S. Internet analysis firm Renesys reported faster data traffic to Cuba and concluded that the cable had been switched on.

Barclays forced to name executives on Libor list

LONDON (Reuters) - Barclays was forced to name former chief executives Bob Diamond and John Varley, current finance director Chris Lucas and other top executives and traders who are linked to a global rate-fixing probe, despite their requests for anonymity.

A UK judge ordered the bank to reveal their identities on Thursday during a preliminary hearing for a British test case on the mis-selling of interest rate swaps brought by a residential care home operator.

Guardian Care Homes alleges Barclays mis-sold interest rate hedging products based on Libor (London interbank offered rate)in a case that is shining a light on those involved in the bank's interest rate-setting process.

"The cat is out of the bag," said Judge Julian Flaux, as he dismissed requests by 104 former and current Barclays staff for anonymity, citing the public interest.

Barclays was the first bank to be fined for trying to game Libor, a central cog in the global financial system and a benchmark for around $550 trillion in contracts ranging from interest rate derivatives to home loans and credit cards.

Other banks remain under investigation in a probe stretching from the U.S. to Japan that is triggering lawsuits from those alleging rate-rigging pushed up their loan costs.

Barclays released a list of staff on Thursday whose email accounts it had previously disclosed to regulators.

The list includes a subset of 24 people who have been named in regulatory documents referring to Barclays' attempted rigging of Libor. That shorter list was not immediately available.

None of those named is necessarily implicated in any wrongdoing.

"There is a legitimate public interest in the true picture in relation to the manipulation of Libor by banks generally, not just Barclays, being brought fully to light," Flaux said.

"In my judgment, fair and accurate media reporting of all aspects of Libor manipulation, including the involvement of employees and ex-employees of Barclays and their identity, is an important aspect of the public obtaining that true picture."

NAME CALL

Those named include Rich Ricci, head of Barclays' investment bank and former compliance head Stephen Morse, who was notified in 2008 about problems brewing, according to documents that were made public last year. He left to become lead the compliance department at Canada's Toronto-Dominion Bank.

Benoit de Vitry, the current treasurer who used to run commodities and emerging markets, Ivan Ritossa, now retired, who ran currency and prime services business, money markets desk head Mark Dearlove and former group treasurer Jon Stone were also named.

Others include Ryan Reich, a 30-year-old former Barclays swaps trader based in New York who was fired in 2010. U.S. prosecutors are investigating Reich's activities while at Barclays between August 2006 and March 2010, according to several people familiar with the situation.

Ritankar "Ronti" Pal, who oversaw desk trading since 2006, was also on the list. He recently left Barclays.

Other names included Eric Bommensath, a French bond trader who became global head of fixed income and a member of the bank's executive committee, and Harry Harrison, a UK banker in charge of dollar-denominated fixed-income trading in New York who is now head of rates.

Lawyers welcomed the publication of the names.

"This shows the judges will not allow the banks to escape scrutiny," said Rich Eldridge of law firm Manches. "Borrowers will be encouraged by the issue being given such importance that it outweighs the risk of innocent people being named."

Barclays was fined $450 million by U.S. and UK authorities last June and Diamond forced out for allowing traders to try to rig Libor and its euro cousin Euribor and for low-balling rates during the 2007/08 credit crunch.

Switzerland's UBS was fined $1.5 billon in December and Royal Bank of Scotland is expected to be penalised shortly.

Barclays says it has fired five employees and disciplined eight others after an internal investigation into how it submitted Libor rates. Many identified in that investigation have also left the bank, it told lawmakers in November.

"This started as an alleged mis-selling case which the bank considers has no merit," Barclays said in a brief statement on Thursday. "The addition of a claim based on what happened with Libor does not change the bank's view.

"The fact that someone's documents were reviewed by the bank during its review of millions of documents does not mean that such person was involved in any wrongdoing."

The Hardcosts of filmmaking | IndyBlog

The Hardcosts of filmmaking

Posted by Matthew Schniper on Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 1:24 PM

The crowdfunding continues on the local film front.

While Creep! prepares to raise a little more post-production money via this Friday's Hootenanny for the Arts, a new short project seeks "initial funding to secure talent, locations and equipment."

The film's called Hardcosts, and you can view its clever Indiegogo pitch here:

You can also track the film's progress via Twitter and Facebook.

As the video pitch mentioned, filmmaker Aaron Hartshorn will be working with many of the same folks who assisted on Creep!, including Pete Schuermann, who'll offer project supervision.

The film will also be shot on Schuermann's same Scarlett RED camera.

For this initial round of fundraising, it's only seeking $1,500, with another more formal round coming sometime around March, says Hartshorn.

Here's the quick summary, current budget explanation and some poster art:

Hardcosts is a dark comedy about Dustin. Dustin is a timid young man who just found the love of his life. The only problem is her psychopath of a father. Struggling with this, Dustin has to ask him how far he really will go for love ...

In order to get this film off the ground we need initial funding to secure talent, locations and equipment. Every penny raised from this first fundraiser will go towards these costs. And any left over funds will go straight to other costs of the film (wardrobe, food and transportation costs).

If you contribute to the film, you will be able to be apart of the rapidly growing film community in Colorado springs. Any contribution you make will truly have a huge impact ? for this is only the first of many projects. That said, it's so important that this project succeeds for that reason.
