The Inspirational Diet Program by Doctor Lloyd Glauberman ...

It would appear that each month ushers in a fresh type of diet for weight reduction. We see these diets on television, on magazines and on the web in various guises most of them suggesting healthy workout, healthy diet and healthy lifestyle changes. More regularly than not, many people will fail at these diets until The Motivational Weightloss Program comes into their life. No, this is not still another diet frequency that provides the ways and means to achieve a lean and mean body via a set of nutritional instructions and exercise program. We already have too many of the services and goods available in the market that may or may maybe not succeed. Actually, you can select the weight reduction plan and exercise program that you think works best for your situation, all while also using the rules present in Dr. Glauberman?s work. So, the question remains: What is the The Motivational Weightloss Program? To put it simply, this can be a plan pressing on the many emotional areas of fat loss. This program originated by known psychiatrist and hypnotist, Lloyd Glauberman. You will need not as there are number subliminal messages within any portion of the program.Instead worry, Dr. Glauberman uses his revolutionary process known as Hypno Peripheral Processing (HPP) to bring about lasting changes in to how the crowd thinks about the subject of weight loss. You can find number diet and exercise plans in the The Motivational Weightloss Program since Dr. Glauberman wants to breakdown the mental barriers that prevent anyone from actually following the weight loss programs proposed by health and fitness experts.Think of the Dr. Lloyd Glauberman?s program being an essential adjunct treatment to your weight loss treatment. While your human body undergoes the required changes in size, form and girth through a healthy diet and exercise program, your brain also undergoes a series of delightful changes when you can adhere to your healthy lifestyle. If you?ve ever gone on yo-yo diets, backslid into overeating and reverted to being truly a couch potato, it might have been mostly because your mind was unprepared for these physical changes. This is where The Motivational Weightloss Program is available in. Slowly but surely, you will condition your mind to simply accept the real changes being made until such time that whatever life style changes are required in your weightloss program becomes second nature for you. For example, if the lifestyle changes say that you have to eat less, listening to the CD will condition your mind to actually eat less.Indeed, so lots of people fail inside their weight loss efforts because of their exclusive focus on what the body desires and then pandering to it. The mind is then woefully and wrongfully ignored, that ought to not be as weight loss is really usually an of mind over body. So, if your weight loss programs are not going as expected, we suggest listening to the The Motivational Weightloss Program today.

Jamaica?s Finance Minister Peter Phillips

Jamaica is making adjustments to its tax regime to enhance its attractiveness for international business entities looking for a home in the Caribbean.

A bill encouraging overseas companies to establish their head offices in Jamaica, and to exempt officers of such companies from the payment of income tax, was passed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The Bill ? The Income Tax (Amendment) Act ? was piloted by Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr Peter Phillips and, having been passed without any amendments, is on its way to the Senate for approval.

In his remarks, Phillips noted that the Bill exempts persons, who are not residents of Jamaica and who perform group head office activities, from the payment of income tax.

?The point to note here is that not all activities of all foreign corporations are being exempt by this bill. The purpose of the bill is to provide incentives for large international corporations operating in multiple jurisdictions to move their activities to Jamaica. We are not giving up anything that we now have, rather it is seeking to attract additional economic activities to the country and expand the pool of tax over time generally, by virtue of these activities,? the finance minister said.

He added that any entity approved will be subjected to an approval process where it will need to meet the criteria for carrying out group headquarter activities, being incorporated in Jamaica and ensuring that at least 30 percent of its staff members are Jamaicans.

The bill defines an approved group head office company as an entity or other body corporate that operates in Jamaica and other parts of the world and establishes its head office and performs, among other activities, the supervision, management or monitoring of its operations; accounting, data processing, engineering, and other technical support; centralised treasury management and similar funding activities; and other such activities, as may be specified by the minister, by order, published in the Gazette.

A company or other body corporate may apply to the minister, in the prescribed form and manner, for a certificate designating it as an approved group head office company.

The Bill also imposes an obligation on a group head office to notify the Minister in writing, at least 90 days before the cessation of employment of every employee to whom the exemption is given.

Meanwhile, Phillips informed that regulations are being drafted to address the audit and assessment methodology to be used in ensuring that the entity is operating in keeping with the Income Tax Act as it relates to the anti- tax avoidance measures and the arm?s length principle.

?In that regard, Cabinet also approved the introduction of transfer pricing rules which will be used to address any tax related transactions where the arm?s length principle is applicable,? the finance minister noted.

Phillips also informed that the regulations in respect of the auditing and assessment methodology should be available by the end of October 2012.

?The transfer pricing rules are at the discussion stage, with one of the multilateral agencies offering assistance in drafting the rules. Until transfer pricing rules are introduced, the arm?s length principle in the Income Tax Act will be applied,? the finance minister said.

The measure also received support from opposition spokesperson on finance, Audley Shaw, who noted the possibility for the improvement and expansion of investment in infrastructure.

?If we can attract more companies that will not just come to Jamaica and maybe rent office space, but eventually put up their own permanent building, which in itself becomes a new sign of commitment to permanence in their investment in Jamaica, then that will add further value to our economy,? Shaw said.

Helicopter heroes save lives of severely injured patients

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The benefits and cost effectiveness of helicopter transport for severely injured patients is of continued debate. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Critical Care shows that for severe blunt trauma, patients transported by helicopter had a lower risk of death, compared to those transported by road.

In a multi-centre study, based in university hospitals across France, researchers compared initial patient status at the scene of the accident, with time taken to get to hospital, type of treatment received pre-admission, and to health at discharge, or after 30 days.

At first there seemed to be no difference in mortality between those transported by helicopter and those by road, however once the data had been adjusted for severity of injury the results became clear. Patients transported by helicopter stood a better chance of survival than those transported by road.

Dr Thibaut Desmettre, who led this study, explained, "Transporting very ill patients is a balancing act. Overall it took longer for patients transported by helicopter to reach hospital and they tended to need more emergency care once admitted. On the other hand these patients were more intensively treated at the scene and en route than those transported by road-ambulance crews -- which might go some way towards explaining their improved chances of survival."

However the benefit seen could not all be attributed to the more aggressive therapy they received before, or after, they arrived at hospital. Dr Desmettre continued, "We were unable to measure the distance the patients travelled, nor where their accident occurred -- some accidents occur in places where road access is too difficult -- and what impact this had on severity of injury or choice of sending a helicopter crew." Helicopters are a costly and limited resource and unfortunately the benefit to patients has to evaluated in this light. However, for these patients, with the most severe injuries, transport by helicopter saves lives.

This Steady Canadian Stock Yields 5% | TopStockAnalysts.com

While no developed nation came out of the Great Recession unscathed, some did emerge in a far better position than other major developed countries.

One of those is our neighbor to the north? Canada.

In fact, I think Canada is one of the single best places investors can invest in order to diversify their portfolio and earn compelling returns.

(It?s easy to buy Canadian stocks ? most of them trade as either American Depository Receipts (ADRs) or over-the-counter in the United States.)

A number of factors have contributed to Canada?s economic resilience. First, natural resources ? including the production of energy commodities, metals mining and forestry, which account for nearly 12% of the country?s GDP.

While the collapse in prices for crude oil and most industrial metals during the heart of the financial crisis hurt this segment of the economy, commodity prices rebounded quickly in 2010 and 2011.

And, unlike the United States, Canada?s housing market didn?t collapse in 2008. In fact, modest income growth has continued to power activity in this sector in recent months.

Canadian banks have generally been less aggressive lenders than their U.S. counterparts, and Canadian regulators required banks to hold more capital to support their loans at the dawn of the crisis in 2007.

That means that as global credit conditions deteriorated, Canadian banks were less vulnerable to mounting bad loans and problem debts.

And Canadian companies also have a history of paying larger dividends than their peers in the United States. The Toronto Stock Exchange Index offers an average yield of 3.1%, a full percentage point higher than the 2.1% average for the U.S. S&P 500.

That makes the nation?s equity markets a fertile hunting ground for income-oriented investors.

There is one company, currently yielding 5%, that has been a major beneficiary of Canada?s strong housing and natural resources economies?

Bird Construction (Toronto: BDT; OTC: BIRDF) is a general contractor in Canada, focused on non-residential construction, including industrial, institutional, commercial and retail projects.

Bird has historically been a market leader in construction projects related to Canada?s energy industry and, in particular, construction activity surrounding Alberta?s oil sands.

As energy prices tumbled in late 2008 and early 2009, most of the big Canadian energy producers, including Suncor (NYSE: SU) and Encana (NYSE: ECA), slashed their capital spending budgets and delayed or canceled planned production expansion projects.

In particular, profitably producing crude from the oil sands region of Canada requires relatively high oil prices. It?s estimated that when prevailing prices fall much below $70 per barrel, investment activity slows.

In December 2008, oil prices fell into the mid-$30s per barrel, down from nearly $150 per barrel in the middle of 2008. Bird?s energy construction business went from boom to bust in a matter of just a few months. But Bird?s management team handled that historic crisis well, beefing up the company?s institutional business to offset the decline in its energy-focused industrial group. Institutional projects include the construction of schools, government buildings, law enforcement training facilities and other public works.

Just as in many other countries around the world, Canada stepped up public works spending during the economic downturn to help stimulate the economy, and Bird took advantage by bidding on many of these profitable deals.

For the most part, these institutional projects are conducted as public-private partnerships (PPP) where private companies share the risk and receive significant support from the Canadian national or provincial governments.

In the most recent fiscal year, the institutional business unit accounted for 58% of Bird?s total revenues, compared with just 31% for its industrial business, a unit that includes energy-related projects.

Over the past three years, Bird has boosted its payout at an 11.3% annualized pace. And in April 2012, the company boosted its monthly payout once again by 9% from C$0.055 per month to C$0.06 per month. At current prices, Bird yields roughly 5%.

Management has indicated that it will continue to bid on government PPP contracts, but this market is expected to slow as the government?s stimulus efforts wind down.

Fortunately, the even more profitable industrial and energy business is enjoying the beginnings of yet another rebound that kicked off in the second half of 2011. In fact, in its annual results released back in early March, Bird indicated that its oil sands construction business is likely to move back to pre-2009 levels in 2012.

With Brent Crude oil prices continuing to hover above $105 per barrel, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate around $90 per barrel, activity in the oil sands region, where Bird is a major player, could continue to benefit Bird.

Risks to Consider: Investing in oil sands is a risky game, and a renewed downturn in commodity prices in late 2012 could particularly hurt the oil sands producers, which would also affect Bird.

Action to Take ?> With a long history of raising dividends each year, Bird Construction rates a ?buy? under C$15.50 on the Toronto exchange and $15.50 for those buying the U.S.-traded over-the-counter shares.

P.S. ? If you?re tired of earning sub-par yields on your hard-earned money, you don?t have to settle for U.S. Treasuries or stocks. There?s a whole universe of large, stable, high-dividend paying international stocks available to investors. The problem is, most regular investors don?t know about them.

I pull back the curtain in this special report, Forget Treasuries ? Buy These 12% Yields Instead.

Fujitsu Stylistic M532

Android-powered tablets?have largely been a consumer play so far. While it's common to see tablets in retail, transportation, and other businesses, they're by and large Windows XP/7 or iOS devices. Fujitsu, a big name in enterprise, aims to change that with its new Android-powered Fujitsu Stylistic M532 ($549/32GB direct).?Like the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet, the M532 is aimed primarily at business users, with added security features and above-average durability. The M532 runs on a fast quad-core processor and packs plentiful internal storage into its thin chassis. Unfortunately, the M532 suffers from an inaccurate touch screen, a puzzlingly fuzzy display, and a high price tag. If you absolutely must have the Absolute Computrace Mobile security built-in, the M532 is one of only a handful of tablets to offer it, but other than that, it's hard to justify its price.

Design and Features
The Fujitsu M532 is all business, and its classy, understated design reflects that. At 10.3 by 6.9 by 0.35 inches (HWD) and 1.23 pounds, the M532 is large, yet surprisingly slim and light. The black rubberized plastic back has a nice grippy texture to it, reminiscent of the Blackberry Playbook?. Along the top edge is a 3.5mm headphone jack and the power button. To the right are the volume buttons, micro USB port, and a plastic flap that covers a microSD card slot. The bottom houses a proprietary 30-pin dock connector. There is no HDMI out, and you must use the dock connector for charging and the micro USB port for syncing separately. Fujitsu does sell a docking cradle ($69 direct) which allows HDMI out and USB inputs. There are two speakers on the back, and while they're a bit small, they get pretty loud and don't sound overly harsh.?

The M532 is also billed as a semi-rugged tablet with a MIL-STD-810G rating, which means it should hold up to some shock, drops, high and low temperatures, and vibrations.

The 10.1-inch 1,280-by-800-pixel display is, on paper, par for the course, but it's a low-quality panel. It's the same resolution found on the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, but where the TF300's display looked crisp and sharp, the display on the M532 is fuzzy. Text, for example, looks a bit out of focus depending on how zoomed in it is. The touchscreen is also inaccurate. Touches would occasionally register in wrong spots, and I noticed a bit of delay when dragging my finger across the screen. Scrolling with a single finger would often cause random bouts of zooming in and out, exacerbating the fuzzy text problem. This didn't happen all the time, but it was often enough to cause frustrating distractions. The screen itself gets moderately bright, but is prone to reflections that make it difficult to use outdoors in bright sunlight.

The tablet has an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Both are pretty typical tablet cameras?they aren't spectacular, but they are serviceable. Images in good lighting look well balanced, with a fair amount of detail, but the camera really struggles in low light, producing images with almost no detail. The rear-facing camera can also shoot 1080p video at a steady 30 frames per second, but I noticed a bit of motion blur and poor image stabilization. The front-facing camera is fine for Skype calls, but not much else.

This is a Wi-Fi only tablet that connects to 802.11b/g/n networks on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. GPS and Bluetooth 3.0 are on board as well. The default 32GB configuration has 26.53GB of free internal storage. Our 32 and 64GB SanDisk microSD cards worked fine, but the card slot is a bit too recessed and requires either long nails or something to poke the card fully into place. The M532's video player supports MPEG4, H.264, and AVI videos, but not Xvid or DivX. For audio, the M532 supports MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, but not FLAC or WMA.

In our battery rundown test, which loops a video with screen brightness set to max and Wi-Fi on, the M532 lasted only 5 hours, 2 minutes. It was a good deal shy of the TF300's 7 hours, 53 minutes and on the low side for 10-inch tablets. For a business-oriented tablet, I would have liked to see longer battery life.

Scientists prevent heart failure in mice

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Cardiac stress -- for example, a heart attack or high blood pressure -- frequently leads to pathological heart growth and subsequently to heart failure. Two tiny RNA molecules play a key role in this detrimental development in mice, as researchers at the Hannover Medical School and the G?ttingen Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry have now discovered. When they inhibited one of those two specific molecules, they were able to protect the rodent against pathological heart growth and failure. With these findings, the scientists hope to be able to develop therapeutic approaches that can protect humans against heart failure.

Respiratory distress, fatigue, and attenuated performance are symptoms that can accompany heart failure. A reason for this can be an enlarged heart, a so-called cardiac hypertrophy. It may develop when the heart is subjected to permanent stress, for example, due to persistent high blood pressure or a valvular heart defect. In order to boost the pumping performance, the heart muscle cells enlarge -- a condition that frequently results in heart failure if not treated.

Two small RNA molecules tip the balance

A research team at the G?ttingen Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and the Hannover Medical School discovered that two small RNA molecules play a key role in the growth of heart muscle cells: the microRNAs miR-212 and miR-132. The scientists had observed that these microRNAs are more prevalent in the cardiac muscle cells of mice suffering from cardiac hypertrophy. To determine the role that the two microRNAs play, the scientists bred genetically modified mice that had an abnormally large number of these molecules in their heart muscle cells. "These rodents developed cardiac hypertrophy and lived for only three to six months, whereas their healthy conspecifics had a normal healthy life-span of several years," explained Dr. Kamal Chowdhury, researcher in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry. "For comparison, we also selectively switched off these microRNAs in other mice. These animals had a slightly smaller heart than their healthy conspecifics, but did not differ from them in behavior or life-span," continued the biologist. The crucial point is when the scientists subjected the hearts of these mice to stress by narrowing the aorta, the mice did not develop cardiac hypertrophy -- in contrast to normal mice.

A microRNA inhibitor protects mice against hypertrophy

The scientists were also able to protect normal mice against the disease. When they gave them a substance that selectively inhibits microRNA-132, no pathological cardiac growth occurred -- even when the hearts of these mice were subjected to stress. "Thus, for the first time ever, we have found a molecular approach for treating pathological cardiac growth and heart failure in mice," said the cardiologist Professor Dr. Dr. Thomas Thum, MD, Director of the Institute for Molecular and Translational Therapy Strategies (IMTTS) at the Hannover Medical School. With these findings, the researchers hope that they will be able to develop therapeutic approaches that can also protect humans against heart failure. "Such microRNA inhibitors, alone or in combination with conventional treatments, could represent a promising new therapeutic approach," said Thum.

"In mice with an overdosage of the two microRNAs in their heart muscle cells, the cellular 'recycling program' is curbed," explained Dr. Ahmet Ucar, who together with Shashi K. Gupta was responsible for the experiments. In this recycling process, the cell breaks down components that are damaged or no longer required and reuses their constituents -- a vital process that, for example, ensures the organism's survival under stress conditions. In mice without the microRNAs -212 and 132, this recycling program is more active than in their normal conspecifics. Conceivably, the reduced cellular recycling could be a cause of the observed cardiac hypertrophy.

22 hrs.

Since the iPhone 5 hit store shelves on Friday, complaints about the propensity of the?device's paint?job to scratch and chip have started flooding in.?But according to an email exchange Apple senior vice president of marketing Phil Schiller allegedly had with a customer such cosmetic issues are "normal."

According to?9to5 Mac's Seth Weintraub, one of the blog's readers sent an email to Schiller, pointing out that his iPhone 5 is showing "some scuffs, scratches and marks throughout the band around the phone."?He asked what he and others who are seeing this issue can do and whether there are any plans to fix it.

The reply Schiller sent, according to this customer, explained that "[a]ny aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal."

Schiller's somewhat brief?reply reminds us?of the time when late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs told a?customer who complained about the iPhone 4 reception issues he experienced when his hand covered the device's antennas that he should "[j]ust avoid holding it that way."

Of course, that email preceded what is now referred to as "Antennagate" and?a press conference during which Apple addressed these reception issues and offered every iPhone 4 owner a free "Bumper" case.

Just like the iPhone 4 reception issues reported back then, the cosmetic issues reported in the last few days?appear to only affect some iPhone 5 owners. NBC News tech?editor Wilson Rothman and I got the?iPhone 5 on the same day,?but while his is already showing wear (as you can see in the images above) after spending time in and out of his jeans pocket, my own device, also black, is still in pristine condition. And that's after it?spent a lot of time in a purse pocket along with other smartphones, loose change and my house keys.

Because of the strange way our experiences parallel the iPhone 4 reception woes, we can't help but wonder if we'll soon be hearing more on this,?possibly even from Apple, which has yet to reply to our inquiry. Given the fact that you can't upgrade hardware as easily as software (or maps), there's certainly a chance of a "Paintgate" in our near future.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Ex-Guatemalan commander linked to massacre to stand trial in U.S.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A former Guatemalan Army commander suspected in a notorious massacre during the country's civil war has been ordered to stand trial in the United States on charges he lied about his past to gain U.S. citizenship, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

Jorge Sosa, who was extradited to the United States from Canada last week, was ordered held without bond during a hearing on Monday in U.S. District Court in Riverside, California, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeannie Joseph said.

Joseph said a November 27 trial date had been set for Sosa, who has been accused of taking part in the Guatemalan civil war massacre at Dos Erres, a farming village where 250 men, women and children were brutally slain by military commandos in 1982.

U.S. prosecutors have no jurisdiction in Guatemala and have not charged Sosa, also known as Jorge Vinicio Sosa Orantes, in connection with the Dos Erres killings that are considered one of the worst atrocities in that country's bloody, 36-year civil war.

Instead, he is charged with making false statements to immigration officials to cover up his past as he sought to become a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2008. If convicted, Sosa could be sent to Guatemala after serving his U.S. sentence to face potential charges there.

Law enforcement sources say Sosa, who has been living in the Riverside area, fled to Canada when he learned he was under investigation. Riverside is about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

An attorney for Sosa could not immediately be reached for comment. The ProPublica news service has reported that Sosa denied guilt in a recent interview from jail in Canada.

According to a U.S. federal grand jury indictment issued in September 2009, Sosa was a commanding officer of a Guatemalan Army special forces unit known as the Kaibiles that killed nearly everyone living in tiny Dos Erres, many by hitting them with a sledgehammer and dumping their bodies into a well.

Many of the women and girls of the village were raped before they were slain.

The Kaibiles unit had been dispatched to Dos Erres to find members of a guerrilla group that had ambushed a military convoy in November 1982, killing soldiers and taking their weapons.

One of two known survivors, 33-year-old Oscar Ramirez Castaneda, was granted political asylum on Monday in the United States, according to his attorneys.

Castaneda, who learned only last year that he had been abducted as a young boy by a Guatemalan army lieutenant during the massacre and raised by the man's family, was assisting prosecutors in cases against former members of the Kaibiles.

Sosa is the fourth former Kaibiles member living in the United States to be targeted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center. (Editing by Tim Gaynor and Philip Barbara)

FBI to investigate officer shooting double-amputee

HOUSTON (AP) ? A caretaker at a group home for the mentally ill called police in the middle of the night because a one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair was angry and wouldn't calm down.

What happened next is the subject of an investigation that now involves the FBI. One of the two Houston police officers who entered the home fatally shot the double-amputee in the head, saying he was cornered by the wheelchair and thought his partner was being threatened by what turned out to be a ballpoint pen.

Houston's police chief responded Monday to escalating criticism about the weekend shooting by cautioning against a rush to judgment. Community and civil rights groups say the incident is another example of problems that the Houston Police Department has with using excessive force.

"It is my desire to have everyone reserve judgment until all the facts and evidence in this investigation have been gathered," Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland said.

Officer Matthew Marin shot 45-year-old Brian Claunch early Saturday after responding to a call that the man, who reportedly lost two limbs in a train accident, was causing a disturbance. Police say Claunch cornered and threatened to kill Marin, who reportedly told investigators he didn't know the object in Claunch's hand was a pen.

John Garcia, who owns the group home, told reporters over the weekend that Claunch liked to draw.

McClelland said Monday he would enlist the FBI's help in the investigation and reassured the public his officers are trained to deal with people with mental problems.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said she didn't know if the department requesting FBI assistance in officer-involved shootings was rare but said "it's the step we're taking at this point."

But the Greater Houston Coalition for Justice, a group that includes 16 local and national civil rights organizations, suggested Claunch's death was part of a bigger problem at the Houston Police Department.

"The deeper problem is a failure to discipline for excessive force, especially in the area of shootings," said Randall Kallinen, a member of the group and a local civil rights attorney. "They are concerned only about liability."

Kallinen said he would like the shooting to spark a change in the department regarding discipline and training of officers.

Marin, a five-year veteran of the department, has been placed on three-day administrative leave. That is standard department procedure for all officer-involved shootings, and Silva said no unusual measures were being taken that would prevent Marin from returning to duty this week.

It's the second time Marin has killed a suspect while on duty. In 2009, investigators said Marin came upon a man stabbing his neighbor to death at an apartment complex and fired when the suspect refused to drop the knife, according to the Houston Chronicle.

In 2008, Marin was one of three Houston police officers who were accused of assaulting the father of Green Bay Packers player Donald Driver. They were later cleared and filed a defamation lawsuit that was later dropped.

The Healing Hands group facility, located in a somewhat rundown brick home, was quiet Monday.

Garcia could not be found at the facility on Monday and a woman at a separate address under his name said he was not there and asked a reporter to leave the property.

Estella Olguin, a spokeswoman for the Harris County Guardianship Program, said Claunch had been a ward of the county since 2003 and had lived at the home since March.

Garcia said Claunch had lost his right leg to just above the knee and his entire right arm when he was hit by a train, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said Claunch was schizophrenic.

Marin and a partner arrived at the Healing Hands around 2:30 a.m. responding to a disturbance call made a caretaker at the home. Police have not elaborated on the nature of the disturbance and authorities Monday had not yet made the 911 call public.

Once inside the home, according to a department statement Monday, the two policemen found Claunch agitated and threatening to kill the officers and other residents. While yelling at the officers, Claunch "waved a shiny object in his hand in their direction," according to the statement.

Police say Claunch refused an officer's direction to drop what turned out to be a ballpoint pen.

"As the suspect backed one of the officers into a corner, he attempted to stab the officer with the object," the statement said. "Officer Marin, fearing for his partner's life, and his own safety, discharged his duty weapon one time, striking the suspect."

Relatives of Claunch could not be found Monday. Public records show Claunch had brushes with the law multiple times over the last 20 years, including a 2006 arrest for trespassing at a shelter. His record also includes drug convictions.

Stock index futures signal early losses

PARIS (Reuters) - Stock index futures pointed to a lower open on Wall Street on Monday, with futures for the S&P 500 down 0.34 percent, Dow Jones futures down 0.3 percent and Nasdaq 100 futures down 0.18 percent at 5.02 a.m. EDT.

European shares and the euro followed a broad range of riskier assets lower on Monday as investors refocused attention from central bank stimulus schemes to weak economic fundamentals and a new range of risks in the euro zone's debt crisis.

German business sentiment dropped for a fifth successive month in September to its lowest level since early 2010, showing even the strongest of Europe's economies is succumbing to an economic downturn.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch sustained a loss of nearly $10 million on Friday due to an "operational error" in handling of stock option trades known as dividend trades by the company's Merrill Pro unit, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

Unionized workers at Ford Motor Co's Canadian operations have voted in favor of a four-year labor agreement with the company, the Canadian Auto Workers union and Ford said on Sunday.

Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group closed its Taiyuan plant in northern China on Monday after what the company called a "personal" dispute spiraled into a brawl involving 2,000 workers in a dormitory late on Sunday night, injuring 40. The Taiyuan plant, which employs about 79,000 workers, makes automobile electronic components, consumer electronic components and precision moldings. An employee told Reuters the plant also makes parts and assembles Apple's iPhone 5.

U.S. stocks closed flat on Friday even though investors welcomed Spain's efforts to seek a bailout and cheered Apple's newest iPhone that went on sale today, driving its shares to a record high.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> slipped 17.46 points, or 0.13 percent, to close at 13,579.47. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dipped just 0.11 of a point, or 0.01 percent, to finish at 1,460.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> rose 4.00 points, or 0.13 percent, to close at 3,179.96.

Alibaba spins out Aliyun team with $200 million investment, pep talk

Acer CloudMobile with Aliyun

You can imagine that the team building Alibaba's Aliyun mobile OS must have hurt feelings following Google's accusations that Aliyun is just a corruption of Android. Alibaba chief Jack Ma is keen to restore some of that wounded pride, at least on the surface. The CEO has used a since-confirmed staff memo to spin out Aliyun as a separate entity that will "safeguard the healthy growth" of the platform and Alibaba's mobile strategy. It's not solely an instance of tough love, either: Alibaba is putting $200 million into the new firm and will use executive Wang Jian as a link between the two sides, having him serve as the CTO for both companies. With that in mind, Ma's ultimate intentions aren't clear. While the separation may be a sign of a tighter focus on software, it also reduces the impact for Alibaba if anything drags Aliyun down -- and either motivation would be helpful for a company devoted to the web before anything else.

Introducing Health Promotions 2012/2013 - The Point - UBC REC's ...

Welcome to UBC REC?s Health Promotions team! We are so excited for what we have to offer you this year and we would like to share some of the invigorating programs we have lined up this year!

You may have already heard about Rexercise, but this year our goal is a little bit different. Instead of focusing solely on physical well-being, we are promoting positive mental health, which is just as important. It?s all about de-stressing and having fun with Rexercise this year so that we can all have balanced healthy lifestyles. The best part about this is that it?s free! What?s a better way to escape from your studies and get healthy at the same time?

This year, we intend to play a bigger role within REC and around campus. As we make partnerships with the Health and Wellness Centre, we will bring to you Thrive Week (Nov.5-9). This event includes programs that also promote mental well-being and healthy lifestyles. There will be a variety of activities that cater to all different people?s ideas of what mental health means to them. We will be partnering with the Wellness Centre on other events as well such as Stress for Less and Faculty Fairs, so come check them out! All these events are designed to create a positive atmosphere at the University so that students can enjoy life outside of their studies.

We also hope to have a larger presence at some of REC?s big events this year. Look for us at events such as Day of the Longboat, the Great Trek, and the Tri/Du Expo. There, you might see us showing off our stretching, exercising your minds with perplexing problems, or giving you insider tips on nutrition and other healthy habits.

Even if you can?t come out to our main events, we still have something for you! We are all about accessibility and being inclusive. Come check out this webpage for 5 minute fitness ideas, healthy recipes, and a variety of video blogs with lots of helpful information!

Don?t forget, we also have another Shopping Week in January if you missed out on this one! For one week, all the fitness classes in the studio and the dojo will be free for your enjoyment. You can come see if you like them and then sign up for the class if you do! It?s a great way to meet new people, try new things, and get energized with some physical activity.

Now it?s time to meet the team that?s bringing you all these exciting (and healthy) opportunities! All of us look forward to seeing you around campus learning and staying active. The Health Promotions team will come to you with everything from nutritional advice and stress management tips to fitness activities and video blogs about anything you can ask for! If you have any questions or suggestions, please email us at healthpromotions@rec.ubc.ca. Below is a little something about each of us.

Hey! My name?s Alana See and I?m one of the four fabulous assistant directors for Health Promotions this year. I am a 2nd year Kinesiology student who loves KIN pride and spirit, but my original pride stays in my hometown of Chilliwack. Swimming and running are two of my favorite activities, which allow me to release all that pent up craziness!

My name is Chris Yeung and I am currently a 3rd year LFS student majoring in Food Market Analysis. Being healthy has always been a top priority of mine because of my family and sprinting competitively so I decided to join REC in Health Promo! I?m super stoked for this year and want to meet everyone I can so come up and say hi one of these days!

My name is Kerri Bodin and I am a 3rd year Kinesiology student in the interdisciplinary studies stream. ?This is my second year in REC and I am so excited to be a part of Health Promotions and for the year to come! ?If I were a pizza topping, I would be the cheese because I?m easy-going and get along well with most people! ?I am most looking forward to this year?s Re)(ercise series, as the goal is to promote?positive mental, physical and emotional health and a balanced, healthy lifestyle!

My name is Vito Chan and I am a fourth year Kinesiology student. My responsibility in the HP crew is to provide readers with valuable health and wellness tips through UBC REC?s The Point! My goal this year is to introduce fun exercises that are suitable for all skill levels and require minimal equipment!
